Kaizer Chiefs reserves got their DStv Diski Challenge campaign back on track with a well earned 3-2 win over the Black Leopards counterparts in stream 2 of the 2020-21 league campaign at the Bidvest Stadium in Johannesburg on Sunday Morning. It was a welcome win for the Chiefs reserve team who lost their opening league last weekend to Orlando Pirates. Amakhosi put up a dominant showing but gave their coach Arthur Zwane a few nervy moments by conceding a late second goal.
Chiefs drew level in the 27th minute through captain Sabelo Radebe after they had initially gone behind in the 11th minute when Marcus Matshakatini gave the Lidoda Duvha the lead. Amakhosi then turned the tables going ahead Lebohang Lesako in the 56th minute before pulling further ahead when Lesako scored a second. He converted a 67th minute spot kick to make the score 3-1. Leopards scored a second in the 88th minute through Ntlakuso Rikhotso to set up a tight finish but Chiefs held on to record their first win of the game.
Speaking after the game Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane lamented his teams defending in the early stages and would have also liked his charges to be more clinical at the other end as well. “This is one game where could have easily scored 10-15 goals and we did not,” he said. “We ended up conceding unnecessary goals when we could have defended better. It goes back to the time spent off the field due to the pandemic - we can see it is working against our boys because when we were told to stop, we stopped completely.”
Zwane is hopeful though that with more game time, his team will get back their match sharpness and is confident that they will build on this crucial victory. “I believe we will get better and better with time and that in the next game when we create chances like this, we will take them,” concluded Zwane. “I do think we can do better if we sharpen our finishing. We can score many goals and put any team on the back foot from the beginning. When you don’t take your chances, you give opponents confidence and they come at you. Hopefully we learn from this and going forward we will be a better team.”
