Parker Returns to Play His 30th Soweto Derby

Kaizer Chiefs attacker Bernard Parker enters history books as he will be playing in his 30th Soweto Derby match since he joined Amakhosi ahead of the 2011-12 season after his return from the Netherlands where he played for FC Twente.

The attacking player missed Amakhosi’s last game against Baroka due to a minor injury.

Today’s Soweto Derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates is the 175th official meeting since 1970. Chiefs won the last two league games in 2021. The game in March 2021 ended 1-0 with Samir Nurković scoring the goal and in November Keagan Dolly scored a brace in his first Derby. The final score was 2-1. Both matches were played at FNB Stadium.

Chiefs won their last DStv match 1-0 against Baroka FC last weekend in Polokwane, while hosts Pirates drew their midweek encounter against Cape Town City at the Orlando Stadium.

On the log Chiefs are 3rd with after 18 outings and Pirates are 4th after having played three more games than Chiefs. Both teams have collected 32 points. The winner of the match will move up to position 2 on the standings.

Coach Stuart Baxter has altered his team slightly as he makes three changes. Njabulo Ngcobo is back from a long injury layoff to replace Austin Dube in defence; Parker is also back after missing one game through injury. He replaces the suspended Nurković and midfielder Kearyn Baccus makes way for Lebogang Manyama in the starting line-up.

Chiefs will adopt a 3-5-2 formation for the Soweto Derby.

Brandon Petersen will play his first Soweto Derby as he takes his position in goals.

His defending team will be made up of Daniel Cardoso Mulomowandau Mathoho and Njabulo Ngcobo.

In midfield, Chiefs will have Reeve Frosler on the left and Njabulo Blom on the right. Phathutshedzo Nange will play the holding role and will have Parker and Manyama in front of him.

In attack, Keagan Dolly will run on the right and last weekend’s goalscorer Khama Billiat will be on the left.

Mathoho will hand the captain’s armband back to Parker for today’s game.

The referee is Masixole Bambiso. He will be flanked by assistants referees, Moeketsi Molelekoa and Elphas Sitole. The fourth official will be Cedric Muvhali.

The Soweto Derby DStv Premiership battle between the Phefeni Glamour Boys and Sea Robbers will kick off at 15:30 at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto. No spectators will be allowed in the stadium. The game will be live on SuperSport’s PSL Channel 202 on DStv and SABC 1. There will also be live commentary on various SABC Radio stations, with regular updates of the match on Twitter @KaizerChiefs.
