Kaizer Chiefs quest to win a 13th Nedbank Cup will see them face defending Cup Champions BIDVest Wits in the next round of the competition, after the sides were drawn to face each other during Monday’s draw which was held in Johannesburg.

Chiefs overcame National First Division side Nathi Lions on Sunday in the round of 32 while Wits registered a win against Santos as they began the defence of their cup crown, the draw for the Cup means that Chiefs and Wits will square off on twice in the matter of a few days as they meet in a league game shortly thereafter. The Students have been drawn as the designated home team for the game.

Reacting to the draw Chiefs coach Vladimir Vermezovic said “to prove you are the best you need to beat the best, Wits have been playing very well in their last couple of games and playing them will be interesting.”

Vermezovic furthermore does not believe that Chiefs good results against Wits away from home in recent years will have much bearing on the game, “we play them twice in four days this is what we need to look at.

Like I said they have been playing well recently the past won’t mean much, if you ask me which of the two games against them is more important the league or the cup I will say both, we will try to win both of them.”

In their last five trips to face Wits in four league and one cup game away from home The Amakhosi have managed to win them all, the teams last meeting in a cup game was during the 2006-2007 Telkom Cup round of 16 a game which Chiefs won 2-1 with Rotson Kilambe grabbing the winner in extra time.

The teams last faced each other in this competition during the last 16 stage of the 2004 – 2005 event, Wits prevailed on that occasion winning the game 4-3 on penalties after 120 minutes of football failed to produce any goals.
