Up and Up for Chiefs as they face Swallows
Up and Up for Chiefs as they face Swallows

November will see The Amakhosi face up to their two Soweto rivals Moroka Swallows and Orlando Pirates, in ABSA Premiership matches with both games scheduled to take place at the ABSA Stadium in Durban. On Wednesday Chiefs face the first of their two Soweto Neighbors when they host Moroka Swallows in Durban, in what will surely be a game that neither manager would want to lose particularly Muhsin Ertugral as he faces for the second time this season his former assistant at Ajax Cape Town Ian Gorowa.

Ertugral and The Amakhosi came out tops when the teams clashed in the Telkom Cup towards the end of September and it was Chiefs who emerged the victors via the shoot out, after the teams had ended dead locked after 120 minutes of play at 2-2. Chiefs go into the game on the back of two wins the one coming in the form of a 1-0 victory over SuperSport United in the Telkom Knock Out Cup ¼ Finals, and most recently Chiefs defeated Free State Stars 3-0 in a league game on Wednesday evening. With two of his strikers amongst the goals on Wednesday Ertugral will be hoping for more of the same from them on Wednesday evening.

Swallows go into the game on the back of a 1-1 draw in the league against Thanda Royal Zulu, a win for Chiefs will see them leap frog the birds and make serious head way in the standings the prospect of ending the week in the top five position is one that Muhsin Ertugral would most definitely relish. With teams above The Amakhosi faltering Ertugral would not want for his team to drop points, as this is the perfect opportunity for Chiefs to make the most of the opposition slip ups.

The History

Swallows recently celebrated their seventieth anniversary and for half of those years they have playing in official league and Cup games, against the so called new kids on the Soweto Block who came to the township after Swallows but have taken over. It has been more than two years since Swallows last managed a win against The Amakhosi in a league game and that was on the 8th January 2005, when Denis Lota struck inside injury time at the end of the second half to hand Swallows the win, that victory was during the 2004 – 2005 season when Chiefs managed to defend their PSL title which they won during the 2003 – 2004 season.

It was in a league game of the penultimate day of competition during the 2003 – 2004 season, that Chiefs clinched their inaugural PSL title on the 29th May 2004 as they defeated Swallows at the Johannesburg Athletic Stadium 2-0 with Collins Mbesuma scoring in the first half and David Radebe made certain of the win late on with his fifth goal of the season. Since the PSL started during the 1996 – 1997 season Chiefs have held the upper hand over Swallows winning 13 of the 22 games played between the teams over eleven season, Chiefs biggest victory over Swallows took place at the Rand Stadium 0n March 27th 2002. In what can best be described as a demolition derby Chiefs romped home to a 5-1 win, with Jabu Pule scoring two goals as Cyril Nzama, Arthur Zwane and Shaun Permall all contributed with a goal a piece.

Look out for

One of the things that most pleased Muhsin Ertugral after last Wednesday’s win against Free State Stars, was the fact that two of his strikers Mabhudi Khenyeza and Shaun Bartlett got on to the score sheet. For Khenyeza it was his first goal in open play this season as he had previously scored from a penalty, he showed real killer instinct finishing off a long clearance from Itumeleng Khune with a wonderful strike which gave Stars keeper Kennedy Mweene no chance of stopping the powerful shot.

Onismor Bhasera came up with a big performance scoring his goal in the process; the man from Mutare was his usual electrifying and explosive self as he was dynamic at the back and clinical in attack. Bhasera who started and finished off the move which score Chiefs score their second goal against Stars was aided by Kaizer Junior who laid on the goal for the defender, after being the supplier a week ago Chiefs player of the year from the past season could well get on the score board. Itumeleng Khune made some huge saves in the first half against Stars, ultimately his saves kept Chiefs in the game and helped them come back in the second half stronger and be able to win the match. Khune is maturing and getting better with each passing game, he will want keep that up as he plays his first Soweto Derby in a league game for The Amakhosi.

Bevan Fransman at Left back remains one of the most important figures in the Swallows line up, he has been one of the most talked about Swallows players in recent times and with a move to Europe on the cards for him he will be looking to keep up his excellent work rate. Being a former Chiefs player he will be looking to add to the goal he scored in the Telkom Cup against The Amakhosi, he along with other Chiefs old boys Aubrey Mathibe, Neil Winstanley and Songwe Chalwe would like for nothing more than to put one over their old team.

One of the on form Swallows players at the moment is James Chamanga the Zambian hit man got Swallows on the score sheet against Thanda Royal Zulu during their mid week draw, he remains central to Gorowa’s plans for the season.

The 27 year old who joined Swallows from SuperSport in the off season has already proved a worthy purchase and with the African Nations Cup on the horizon he will be looking to get the attention of the Zambian national team selectors with a number of impressive performances from now to the end of the year.
