The one that didn’t get away

Football is a really funny old game as the saying goes and for Derrick Spencer it could not ring any truer as the Chiefs defender/ midfielder, scored his first goal for Chiefs in their 2-1 away win against Golden Arrows in Durban on the weekend.

For Spencer who made his debut for Chiefs over two years in February 2004, the irony is that his first goal for The Amakhosi came against Lamontville Golden Arrows, which happens to be the team that he made his Chiefs debut against, on the 18th February 2004.

Whereas on that occasion it was Stanton Fredericks who scored a late goal to hand Chiefs victory, on Sunday it was Spencer who stepped up late in the game to score what proved to be the match winner for Chiefs.

Through the euphoria and celebration following his first goal for The Amakhosi www.kaizerchiefs.com, caught up with him to speak about that special goal.

KC.COM: Derrick it took you over two years to get your first goal for Chiefs, what a time to find the back of the net?

DS: I think it was long over due I can’t believe that it took me so long to find the back of the net for Chiefs, now that I have got my first goal I think I need to look ahead to wards finding the net again soon.

The other thing is that we wanted a win so badly against Arrows that it did not really matter who got the goals, I just happened to be the right guy in the right place and most definitely at the right time.

KC.COM: Is the goal made more memorable to you by the fact that it signalled Chiefs first victory of the new season?

DS: Most definitely I mean any one could see from the celebrations how much the goal meant to all of us, even the coach got involved in the act and he usually does not.

We needed a league win for many reasons and when we took the lead through Siyabonga Nkosi I knew it was going to be our day, after Arrows scored we still knew that we could get a result out of the game.

Credit to all the guys because we were not content with the stale mate and we worked hard towards finding the second goal and it really was a team goal.

David Radebe and Kaizer Junior did well to get the ball up the field and Kaizer really kept his cool before laying off a pass to me, from that close I just could not miss.

KC.COM: With a well-earned victory against Golden Arrows, are the team now focused on Sundowns next week or the SAA Supa8 Final the following week?

DS: We cannot be thinking about the final as yet because there are still three weeks to go before we face SuperSport in Durban in the Supa8 Final.

At the moment we are looking nowhere else but towards keeping fit this week as we have a number of players away taking part in international matches.

When next week starts Sundowns will come more and more into the picture, as we will start planning for them and all our thoughts, words and actions will be about gaining victory against them.

So its Sundowns first before anything else, because victory against them will demonstrate to every one that we should be taken seriously as title contenders.

KC.COM: Finally Derrick how long do you think Chiefs fans will have to wait for your next goal, based on current stats it would be safe to say you will score again some time in 2009?

DS: (laughs) No, I hope not I will be looking to add to the one I got against Arrows, I do feel more comfortable in front of goal now having got my first goal. I hope the floodgates open and more and more goals flow through for me. My next goal will definitely be well before 2009 I can assure you about that.
