The Kaizer Chiefs reserve team's bid to get their title aspirations back on track were dealt a major blow on Monday afternoon when for the second week in a row they tasted defeat and lost out on the opportunity to keep up the pressure on log leaders Orlando Pirates.

After last week's 3-0 defeat at the hands of the Buccaneers the Chiefs reserves were looking for a win which would keep them in the title hunt, things did not go according to plan for Ace Khuse’s team as they went down 3-1 at home to an enterprising Wits Reserve team. Chiefs were on the back foot early on in the game as the students went ahead after just four minutes, midway through the second half the visitors went 2-0 up and a third goal in the 56th minute made certain of the points for Wits. Chiefs did manage to pull a goal back just past the hour mark when Sibusiso Msomi turned home a free kick from the edge of the Wits penalty area, it was all in vain as The Amakhosi lost for the second week in a row.

Wits started the game the faster of the two teams and took the lead with just four minutes of game time having elapsed, the build up to the goal saw the students knock the ball around before Shenzelani left the Chiefs defence helpless with a ball that went around them and found Richard Ferreira. The young striker picked up the pass and knocked the ball over the on coming Ryan Wuest to put his team in the driving seat, Chiefs though could have been right back in the game but squandered the opportunity to have equalized six minutes after Wits had taken the lead. This after Scara Ngobese glided his way past two defenders and played a short pass to Sibusiso Msomi, who in turn sent the ball to Justice Pilusa who with some quick thinking found Ngobese in space and got the ball forward to him. Scara hit the ball first time and the ball looked destined for the back of the net until Wendell Robinson stretched as far as he could and got a hand to the ball and pushed it away to safety.

On twenty minutes Wits found themselves 2-0 up and scored a goal that was a carbon copy of their first, once again the Chiefs defence were caught out as Ferreira turned provider and got Matshoba in on goal with a pass that went around the Chiefs defenders. Matshoba used his pace to out sprint the Chiefs defence and was able to easily slot the ball past Ryan Wuest, who had once again been left all at sea by his defenders. With four minutes to go for half time Scara Ngobese was again the unfortunate party as Robinson denied him from getting onto the score sheet, Justice Pilusa made his way past two defenders and played an angle pass across goal towards Sibusiso Msomi. Msomi’s initial effort was beat Robinson but was knocked off the line by Ashley Makhanya, the former South Africa u-20 player’s clearance went only as far as Scara Ngobese who hit the ball with power towards goal. Again out of the goal mouth melee Robinson managed to stretch across the goal and got the slightest of touches to the ball and managed to push it away and cleared the danger.

With the second half just a couple of minutes old Chiefs tried to work their way back into the game Wits again had Robinson to thank as he came up with a big save, Scara Ngobese was at his sublime best turn Hashemite and Makhanya on the left before rolling the ball to second half substitute Bongani Sondlana. Who upon collecting the ball upped the pace and found himself in a one on one situation with Robinson, instead of placing the ball Sondlana tried to knock the ball round Robinsons who stretched out his left hand and pulled the ball towards his body which was sprawled across the ground.

Whatever thoughts The Amakhosi had of staging a come back were laid to rest in the 56th minute when Wits went 3-0 up, Shendzelani curled in a free kick from the right hand side and Ndlovu managed to get the slightest of touches to the ball and knocked it beyond the outstretched arms of Ryan Wuest and made its way into the back of the net. The Amakhosi managed to add some respectability to the score line when Sibusiso Msomi at an angle to the Wits goal, spectacularly drove home a free kick which dissected the Wits wall and flew past Robinson and into the back of the net.

Defeat on Monday was not on the agenda for Ace Khuse and his team who now have to win their remaining two fixtures of the season, starting on Thursday against Moroka Swallows and next Monday against Jomo Cosmos. Chiefs will be hoping that with their next two games to be played in Germiston will hand them the necessary points to emerge as the reserve league champions for 2007.
