The tournament which began in 2006 will this time around be held over two weekends with the preliminary rounds taking place over the weekend of the 16th & 17th with the knock-out rounds as well as the final set to be staged over the weekend of the 23rd & 24th June.
Nkosi initially thought up the idea of hosting the tournament in 2006 as he wished to create a platform for upcoming football players to display their skills, he hopes as well this year to add a social responsibility element to the competition where by the competition will be used to highlight certain social ills and encourage young people to actively participate in sport.
For Nkosi the tournament plays a vital role in bringing to light a number of social issues which he feels need addressing need addressing, and from a football point to allow budding young football talents from the area to show off their skills.
Speaking to kaierchiefs.com from his home in the Kwa Zulu Natal Midlands on Monday Nkosi said of the event; “In life every person needs to have the opportunity to demonstrate that they can do something positive with their lives, to be able to demonstrate what they capable of they need to be given a platform to do so. Having myself once upon a time being the guy looking for the opportunity, I along with momentous sports co-operation decided to open up doors for young players from the Newcastle area”.
Siyabonga furthermore believes that by using sport he will be able to address a number of social problems affecting his town, “we also came up with the idea that we needed to have some kind of message to go out with the competition. So we decided that we needed to get out a message to the younger generation that they need to stay away from drugs, alcohol and focus their attention at educating themselves and become more actively involved in sport. As this will help them lead a more full filled life and get them to be active responsible community members, my hope is that through the Siyabonga Nkosi Cup we can help touch or change at least one persons life in a positive way then our objective would be met”.
With R10 000 up for grabs the sixteen teams battling it out for the 2007 Siyabonga Nkosi Cup, will do themselves no harm in having already begun their pre tournament preparations as they will need to be on top of their game when the competition kicks off in mid June. The tournament organizers are also expecting in the region of 5 000 fans to attend the final on the 24th of June at the community sports field in Mndozo located just outside Newcastle.
