Q&A with Jabu Mendu

When Jabulani Mendu joined Chiefs at the start of the season there was a great weight of expectation placed on his shoulders. He failed to deliver in the first part of the season but in recent matches he has shown the potential he promised when he joined the club.

You have rediscovered your form lately.

When I was not part of the team I kept on working hard at my game at training so that when I was given the opportunity I would be able to take it with both hands. I was given that chance and I managed to prove myself and have featured more in the team over the past few games.

You put in a great performance against your former team Moroka Swallows.

When things were not going well, a lot of the Swallows guys were saying that I should not have moved from them to join Chiefs. I needed to prove to myself and the critics that I made the right decision. By playing well and helping the team beat them I think I made my point.

You capped your performance against Dynamos with a well-taken goal.

The game is all about teamwork and not about individual performances. My goal was just part of a group effort that saw us gain three valuable points. All the players contributed to the goal from the defenders to the attackers. You can’t judge a performance over a split second you have to judge it over the entire 90 minutes.

You face an inform Silver Stars team today.

It’s the games against the so-called ‘smaller teams’ that we can’t take for granted. Teams like Silver Stars play above themselves such is their desire to beat Kaizer Chiefs and we are never complacent against them. We prepared for this game as if it was a cup final against Pirates or Swallows.

Stars have proven their worth against Chiefs this season.

They have done well in their first season in the top league. They were a tough opposition in the Coke Cup final and gave us a scare when they held us to a 0-0 draw in a league match. So we are expecting a tough game.
