Anything but a Benin win by two clear goals and Obua and his Cranes team mates would be in next January’s Nations Cup in Ghana, Obua began his afternoon training session at Naturena believing that the game in Freetown would be over by the time the session would end. As it would be, the game was delayed by two hours and Obua who was keeping in contact with a South African photographer at the match, was further frustrated when the mobile network he was using had a systems failure and came back up early on Saturday morning.
When Obua did eventually get the score from Freetown it was not what he was hoping for as it would be Benin won the game 2-0 and they, instead of Uganda, sneaked into the nations cup.
Totally Gutted
Obua spoke to kaizerchiefs.com about his country's failure to make it to Ghana and was not a happy man on Saturday morning, “This is not good for our country as a whole” said Obua.
“We put in a lot of effort in trying to get to Ghana and to miss out on such an illustrious competition is difficult to come to terms with. As a player you want to be playing the nations cups and world cups, testing yourself against the best teams in the continent is what you look forward to and getting to these tournaments is a real achievement.”
Future outlook
While Obua now has to reflect on what might have been, he will not be joining his Chiefs team mates who will be going with Bafana Bafana to Ghana, but he does believe that the Cranes will come out stronger from this experience.
“Our team is still young and most people did not even expect us to come so close to qualifying for the nations cup. We have laid the foundation and we now need to use this lift to get us into the Fifa World Cup in three years time, as well as the next nations Cup in Angola also in 2010. While I might be down at the moment, believe me the Cranes are by no means out.”
