If Ernst Middendorp was looking for a perfect dress rehearsal to test his team’s preparedness for next week’s SAA Supa8 Final against SuperSport United, he could not have asked for anything better than a meeting with the defending PSL Champions.

As Mamelodi Sundowns make their way to the FNB Stadium for Saturday’s match, which both teams will be looking to win, in order to boost their confidence and give them a double lift up the league as well as in morale.

The Brazilians also travel to Johannesburg with a new coach in Gordon Igesund after Sundowns parted ways with championship-winning duo of Miguel Gamondi and Neil Tovey a week ago.

Chiefs go into this crunch game with a statistical advantage as they have had the upper hand over the Brazilians, in the past three seasons losing and drawing just once and winning four, in their last six league meetings against them.

Going into the game against Sundowns Chiefs have been on a roll having disposed of Moroka Swallows, in extra of an SAA Supa8 semifinal on the 24th September to advance to next weeks final.

They followed up that victory with another win in Durban a week later, as they scored a late goal to bring up their first win of the new season with a 2-1 win against Golden Arrows in Chatsworth.

While Chiefs star has been somewhat on the ascendancy, Sundowns’ have begun to wane somewhat, not to the satisfaction of Sundowns club president Patrice Motsepe who has made his unhappiness with his run of recent results publicly known.

When the Brazilians were knocked out at the semifinal stage of the SAA Supa8 competition by Tshwane (Pretoria) rivals SuperSport United, and a week later played to a goalless draw against Bloemfontein Celtic, Motsepe as a result had, had enough and drew the curtain on the Tovey-Gamondi era as he roped in multiple title winning coach Igesund.

As Igesund gets ready for his first challenge with his new team, Chiefs will be hoping that history will be on their side on Saturday as they aim for their tenth league victory, since 1996 – 1997 over Gordon Igesund.

In 20 PSL matches that the Durban born coach has come up against The Amakhosi over the last decade he has managed to attain victory over Chiefs on just one occasion, which was in the inaugural PSL season in 1996-1997. When he led Manning Rangers to the title and along the way recorded his only victory in the PSL against Chiefs, which was a 3-1 win for Rangers.

History could well play its part when the two rivals meet this weekend as games between Chiefs and Sundowns, over the past few years have been action packed and full value for the admission fee. In the corresponding fixture last season Chiefs won a tension filled encounter thanks to a David Obua penalty, but were not so fortunate a week later when they travelled to Loftus for the return leg.

Even though the Amakhosi took the lead through a cracking David Obua free kick in the first half, and dominated play for some time in the game they succumbed the lead and eventually lost the game 3-1.

In recent times though the most memorable encounter between the teams, has to be Chiefs 4-3 victory a Loftus in Tshwane (Pretoria) over Sundowns in a second round league game during the 2004 – 2005 season. It was Sundowns who took the lead in what was to be a seven goal thriller, played in sweltering heat in the capital through Masehe, Chiefs though did not lie down.

The Amakhosi struck back just before halftime as first David Radebe found an equalizer and Collins Mbesuma followed up a minute before the break with a goal to put Chiefs in front. On the stroke of half time Chiefs were reduced to ten men when Scara Ngobese was sent off, to the amazement of those watching on television and those at home.

Ten men Chiefs started off the second half the brighter of the two teams as they extended their lead through Collins Mbesuma, Godfrey Sapula struck soon after wards to reduce the arrears for Sundowns.

Just after the hour mark Collins Mbesuma completed his hat trick as he scored Chiefs fourth goal of the afternoon, Sundowns struck again with five minutes to go Chiefs managed to hold on for what was a truly memorable victory.

Ernst Middendorp will be hopeful that is team will be able to show the same kind of fighting spirit and an all round team effort, which helped them, come through on that blazing day in February 2005.

The Amakhosi on current form should be the pundits favourite to rack up their third straight victory, as Gordon Ingesund is still finding his feet at the Brazilians and this could be favourable for Chiefs.

Fans wishing to attend Saturday’s eagerly awaited clash between Chiefs and Sundowns may purchase tickets at Shoprite-Checkers as well as Computicket outlets nationwide. Tickets for the game are also available at The Amakhosi Store located on the corner of Rissik and Main Streets in the Johannesburg CBD, tickets for the game cost R20 for adults and juvenile tickets are priced at R10.
