Tinashe Nengomasha led his country of birth, Zimbabwe for the first time on Tuesday in a 2-1 win against Bafana Bafana at Rufaro Stadium.

‘The General’ currently the vice captain and expected to lead the Glamour Boys this coming Saturday in the absence of Itumeleng Khune played his heart out on Tuesday evening.

“It was an honour for me to lead my country in a derby,” said Nengomasha speaking to kaizerchiefs.com on his arrival for training on Thursday morning.

“It was also a special win for us. We had not won against South Africa since 2003 and it was time for us to turn the tables. I am delighted that I was part of history. Matches against South Africa are as big in Zimbabwe as matches against Zambia – it is a derby.

“It was also nice that we had something like five or six players from Kaizer Chiefs. Even though Knowledge (Musona) has moved on and is now playing in Germany, he is still part of the Kaizer Chiefs family. I hope that we can take the winning and the spirit that we had on Tuesday to here in Naturena ahead of our tough game against Santos.

‘The General’ added that the win will go a long way in preparing ZIMBABWE for the tough battles ahead; “It was disappointing for us not to qualify for the African Cup of Nations. The win against South Africa gave us an opportunity to redeem ourselves but most importantly it gave us a confidence ahead of the AFCON 2013 qualifiers.

“We have good young players and I have no doubt that we will get even stronger in the coming years.

Nengomasha also paid a tribute to his Coach Norman Mapeza; “He has played for Zimbabwe at the highest level and played in Europe for Gatarasaray. He was a top player. He is now like a friend to us, a father and a motivator,” added Nengomasha.
