Middendorp speaks

What a week we had last week, it was one of those that you would hope will never end, we have achieved the objective we set ourselves at the start of the week which was to be number one the table by the end of it. We now have the same task for this week and that is after we play Sundowns and then Cosmos we want to still be on top and further extend our lead.

The game against Sundowns was as hard as we had expected it to be and it was as entertaining and action packed as envisaged. I thought we really held things together well against Sundowns in defence although we were not as fluent in the midfield or upfront. Perhaps taking into account that we had been inactive for a long time certain of the things that we did like our positioning from set pieces and our shooting from distances was very rusty. Arthur Zwane made some good space to take a number of long-range shots but squandered his opportunities, he was not the only one we had not played a competitive match for a while so it was expected that we would be rusty.

David Radebe was a real nuisance to Sundowns with his persistent niggling runs into their 18 yard box, it was clear that he was frustrating them. Rowen Fernandez had an outstanding game he made some big saves which kept us in the game and he also set up attacks with his long balls and pin point distribution.

We play them again on Wednesday and we now have to put everything that happened in the last week behind us as we enter a very sensitive stage of the league. Sundowns will be looking hard for victory and will also have the services of Dillon Sheppard for this encounter against us. What has happened so far means very little we need to avoid being complacent and will be working extra hard to ensure that we are once again prepared for the challenge. Playing the same team in such quick succession is not the best thing in the world because they will obviously be hoping to avenge the first round loss last week.

Our second game last weekend against Dynamos was really the one we needed to win, victory against them would mean that we would top the PSL standings, it sometimes looks as though we have tougher time dealing with the smaller teams instead of the bigger ones. Although we won I think the victory could have been more convincing. Kaizer Motaung Junior missed two easy chances, which could have meant that we would have been way ahead in the game. Instead we did not take our chances and had to chase the game for a while Louis Agyemang did well to take on four players and lay off to Ditheko Mototo who eventually scored our winner.

The success on the field last week translated into good results off it, with me winning the PSL coach of the month award for December 2005, I was very taken back when learning that I had won the award. This award is not mine alone, iIt is really testament to the team and the technical staff as every one had performed well and put in a great amount of effort in turning the team into title contenders. Remember there was a time not too long ago when Pirates and Sundowns had a big lead over us and every body must be congratulated for bringing us with in striking distance of a third straight title. Remember there is still a long way to go and we need to all of your support till the final day of the season in May.
