Kaizer Chiefs finally broke the hoodoo against SuperSport United when David Mathebula’s tap in found the back of the net three minutes into the second half. The Glamour Boys had not beaten SuperSport since 18 May 2005.

The win was the third one in a row for the scintillating Amakhosi who move to the 4th position with 12 points.

Kaizer Chiefs coach, Muhsin Ertugral kept faith to the same team that did the job against AmaZulu.

Chiefs were the first one to draw blood when Siphiwe Tshabalala cracking strike from 35 metres flew over the bar. Then Reneilwe Letsholonyane watched his long range shot outside the 18 area also going wide. Chiefs tried hard to break the hosts defence with David Mathebula and Siphiwe Tshabalala prominent but Supersport defence stood tall. The first stanza of the game did not produce any goals.

The visitors, Chiefs started the first half with a vengeance with Siphiwe Tshabalala forcing goalkeeper, Dennis Onyango to pull a good save from a close range. This was following a cross from David Mathebula on the right. There was no denying the latter though at the 48th minute when he pounced to a rebound after Dennis Onyango had parried Gert Schalkwyk’s header. 1 nil to Chiefs.

Red hot David Mathebula was at his best, at one stage he dribbled past three Supersport defenders to set up for Reneilwe Letsholonyane but Ricardo Katza came just in time to thwart the danger.

SuperSport United continued to search for an equalizer and it nearly came when Katlego Mashego had his shot going just wide of Khune’s goals. This was followed by Fikru’s header which also went just wide following a good work bust substitute, George Maluleke.

Itumeleng Khune was at his best as he pulled a super save to deny Fikru from a close range. Mathebula came close completing his brace when he watched his close range shot going just over Dennis Onyango’s goals.

At the end, it was a good display for the Glamour Boys who get a huge boost ahead of the Soweto Derby on Saturday.

David Mathebula collected Man of the Match award for his efforts. It was a second one in a row for the Limpopo born midfielder who has without a doubt taken his game to another level.
