Legend, Ryder Mofokeng paid tribute to the late Orlando Pirates star, Botsotso Makhanya who passed on last weekend describing him as a ‘role model’.

Mofokeng, a former Kaizer Chiefs captain and currently a Development Coach at Kaizer Chiefs was speaking during a memorial service in Soweto on Friday afternoon.

“When you drive around today you see pictures of players from Europe, the likes of Messi, Ronaldo and many others. I always ask myself where are the likes of Botsotso Makhanya, and many other legends that contributed immensely to the development of football in the country. Makhanya should be remembered for his contribution in football.

“I never got to play against Dumisani (Makhanya) because when he joined Pirates I was calling it a day but I got to watch him. He was a gifted footballer. He had lot of respect for me. He was also someone who was very passionate about the game. We will miss him,” said Mofokeng.

Ryder Mofokeng, who like Makhanya, was born in Soweto was accompanied by Supporters Relations Manager, Cecil Motaung, Sarah Mokgatle and Media Relations Officer, Luthando Zibeko in what was a well-attended service.

‘Shakes’ Kungwane also spoke highly of the departed legend, “as a left footed player I looked up to Botsotso. We later became good friends as we played against each other during Chiefs v Pirates legend games. We are really saddened by his passing.

Other legends who attended included Pollen ‘Congo’ Ndlanya, Alfred Gwabeni, Thabang Lebese, Steve Sekano, Bernard Leshozi and Ronnie Zondi.
