Loftus Stadium locks out PSL and MTN8

The MTN8 semifinal between Kaizer Chiefs and Moroka Swallows scheduled for Loftus Stadium on Saturday will no longer take place there.

This after Loftus Stadium management unceremoniously closed the door on the PSL on Tuesday afternoon.

The PSL established on Saturday evening after Kaizer Chiefs beat Santos in the MTN8 quarterfinal that Loftus Stadium was available for the MTN8 semifinal this weekend.

But now in an apparent u-turn, the League was informed on Tuesday that the stadium will not be available.

The Stadium management have however still given the go-ahead for rugby to be played there on Friday evening.

“Professor Ronnie Schloss spoke to stadium management over the weekend and they gave us their approval as normal,” said PSL CEO, Kjetil Siem.

“We heard this afternoon of the change of mind, and that Loftus management have closed us out claiming that they have been instructed by the LOC not to make the stadium available to us as construction work is meant to take place there on Saturday and Sunday during the day.”

The MTN8 semifinal was scheduled for a 20h00 kick-off.

PSL management tried unsuccessfully to convince Loftus Stadium management to change their mind.

“It’s really unfortunate that this has to happen, and I feel for the sponsor, as the MTN8 tournament has really made its mark in such a short space of time,” commented Siem.

PSL management and the MTN8 Cup Committee are trying to find an alternate venue.

Absa Stadium in Durban and the Mmabatho Stadium in Mafikeng have been earmarked as potential venues.
