Keeping in touch with favourite player – Tinashe Nengomasha

Posted in News on Apr 16, 2010.

It was back in April 2002 when a 19 year-old tenacious midfielder, Tinashe Nengomasha made his debut for Kaizer Chiefs against AmaZulu. Since then The General has not looked back winning the league title with the Glamour Boys twice in 2003/2004 and 2004/2005 seasons. He spent time on Friday afternoon with kaizerchiefs.com to answer questions from football fanatics.

How do you feel about being Telkom KO champion, and what is it like playing alongside Mthokozisi Yende as compared to Reneilwe Letsholonyane?

Sammy Kwinika

Tinashe Nengomasha: It was something very special to win the Telkom KO once again especially for the fans who have been behind us through and through. It was also good as the Club that we won something on a year we celebrating our 40th birthday.

On your second question, Yeye (Reneilwe Letsholonyane) is obviously more experienced as compared to (Mthokozisi) Yende who is still working on establishing himself at the highest level. In terms of quality though both players offer something different and I enjoy playing with both of them.

As one of the senior players in the team, what guidance do you give to younger players in ensuring that we do not have the other Jabu Pules? Please be honest on this one, would you advise your fellow Zimbabweans to join Kaizer Chiefs and why because last week we saw two players being taken away from Kaizer Chiefs did not come with decent offer?

Hendrick Ntuli

Tinashe Nengomasha: The best advice I give to youngsters is that they should not forget where they come from because I believe when you know this it keeps you straight and narrow. Players should realise that the Club has given them something that makes it possible for them to contribute to their families and it is important that they take their work seriously.

I am already recommending players to the Club and an example is Knowledge Musona. I invited our Football Manager, Bobby Motaung to Zimbabwe at the end of last season to watch Musona. I had known the boy for a long time as he comes from Black Aces Academy where I also come from. I knew that he had what it takes to play at Kaizer Chiefs. While Bobby was there he spotted Thomas Sweswe.

I believe in community development, what is your contribution towards developing the community that has supported you?

Serame

Tinashe Nengomasha: Back home I act as a Technical sponsor for a Club run by my friend, Mudavanu Magaya. The Club campaigns in the Division Two. I have spoken to our Brand Manager, Dara Carroll about doing something for one of the prisons here in Johannesburg. A Police friend of mine once took me to Sun City next to our offices and they approached me to help them with playing material and other things. It is important that as role models in our communities that we give back to people who support us in our chosen careers.

In 2003/2004 you were PSL Player of the Year. Was it a fluke? If not prove it next season!

Innocent Phala

Tinashe Nengomasha: That was not a fluke at all! I like to think I deserved the award and also because as the team we won almost everything that season. We had a great team, the likes of Brain Baloyi, Shoes Mosheou, Cyril Nzama and many others. Players who normally win the Player of the Year Award are normally coming from teams who win the league and we have been unlucky in the past couple of seasons. I am sure next season if we win the title I will be on the reckoning again and besides, winning as the team remain the most important thing for me as compared to individual accolades.

Would you leave Kaizer Chiefs for a local club and don’t you think that by now you should be the captain, please do not be diplomatic? Lastly how do I get to meet my favourite player or get his match official jersey?

Modise Seitlholo

Tinashe Nengomasha: First for the jersey and to meet up with me, please make arrangements with our Media Officer, Luthando (Zibeko)...I will give you a jersey when we meet!

I do not know what plans God has for me. My wish is for me to play for the Amakhosi until I finish my football career. I am the captain at Chiefs!

Why are you always making back passes during the game? I would like to advise you to attack more and please pass forward...

Siyabonga Nkwali

Tinashe Nengomasha: Thank you Bonga for your advise. I am doing all I can to improve as a player and hopefully in our next game I will do as you have advised.

In your opinion who is the best player in the Premier Soccer League to have come out of Southern Africa and which country would you like to go on holiday for except in your country or South Africa?

Tsurupe Gabantese

Tinashe Nengomasha: It has to be Benjani Mwaruwaru without a doubt! He has proven himself by playing in big leagues like in France and in England. I would like to visit United States of America.

Most of the time you grapple with goal scoring but the position where you are playing allows you to score goals, in your opinion what combats you from scoring?

Nhlakanipho Mhlonipheni

Tinashe Nengomasha: (Keeps quite for a while) I am not sure what to say but sometimes I do get into the box and I will not get an opportunity. I had a chance that I should have finished in the Telkom KO semi finals against Orlando Pirates but the ball came to a wrong foot and I was tired...(laughing). I hope to score very soon Nhlakanipho.

How do you feel being the one of the longest serving players and best player at Kaizer Chiefs but you only get to be the vice captain?

Saint Khosa

Tinashe Nengomasha: (Cuts in) That is God’s plan, to serve the Club for as long as I can and to be the Vice Captain. I cannot fight fate...I am grateful to have donned the Gold and Black jersey for such a long time and there are no hard feelings for me for being the vice captain, not at all!

Since you have qualified to be a South African citizen, what do you like about South Africa and do you plan to spend the rest of your life in SA?

Nhlakanipho Buthelezi

Tinashe Nengomasha: I arrived in this country back in 2002 as a 19 – 20 year old leaving my parents back home in Zimbabwe. People were very warm here that even though I left my family back home, people adopted me and treated me like their son. Yes there were those who were pessimistic but mostly were people who were very encouraging and optimistic about what I was about to do in the team.

However, I am not planning to spend the rest of my life here as I still have my mother and my sisters back home in Zimbabwe. Since my father is no longer around, it is important that I go back home spend time with them.

Are you still dreaming of playing overseas and is it true that you are a son-in-law of Oliver Mthukudzi? You are getting yellow cards in each and every game you play...

Jonas Mokau

Tinashe Nengomasha: Lets wait and see what the future offers! Yes, is true that I am married to Oliver’s daughter, Samantha. I play as a defensive midfielder and at times my temper gets the better of me as I do not want to see any player passing me so I always like getting stuck in tackles. Then the referee will see it as a bad tackle...(laughs) I never go out to collect cards my man!

I have seen you several times at Makro Wholesalers. Are you a good money spender? Do you have any plans of expanding your career, like opening a company? Lastly what kind of music do you listen to and what kind of clothes do you wear?

Leonard Moloele

Tinashe Nengomasha: I go almost every month to Makro to buy food for my two families, one from my wife’s side and my own family back home in Zimbabwe. I do look after my money because I have to kids to take care of now and in the future. The same goes to my wife. I am planning to study at some stage; I would love to work in broadcasting industry in the near future.

I listen to different kinds of music, for instance when I am with my wife I would go for romantic stuff (Smiles). Sometimes when I am in camp, I listen to Hip Hop, Rap, House depending on my mood. As for clothes, I like wearing shorts and be relaxed when I go to training. I do dress up sometimes and recently I wore a suite during my mother in law’s 50th birthday back in Zimbabwe!

You play as if you life depends on football, particular Chiefs. What motivates you to always play with such energy? Where do you come from in Zimbabwe?

Mangaliso Mashiane

Tinashe Nengomasha: I always wanted to do well in life and I use my God given talent to achieve my dreams. I did not get everything on silver spoon in life, it was hard growing up. I also get motivated when I see the Amakhosi singing and raring behind us at the stadium...I always go out to break my leg for them on the pitch.

I was born in Harare, a football neighbourhood Glen – Norah that has produced some of the great footballers in Zimbabwe, Moses Changu, former Chiefs midfielder Claudius Zviripayi, Vitalis Takawira and some guys who are making their name in Europe.

Kaizerchiefs.com together with The General, Tinashe Nengomasha would like to thank you for taking time to send messages of support and questions.
