When David Obua rose to head Chiefs into the lead against Orlando Pirates back in October, few people had heard of the lanky player and even fewer would have thought he would have had what it takes to help Chiefs gain the upper hand over the old enemy.

After that game Obua began to weave his way around opponents and adoringly into the hearts of millions of Chiefs fans, he was than the hero a second time around as he scored to ensure Chiefs did the double over Pirates for the season.

In mid February when the league resumed Obua showed his knack for shining on the big stage as he scored twice in back to back games against Mamelodi Sundowns, added to this Obua’s hard working ethic and friendly nature have made him a popular public figure.

Recently he began walking away with public opinion polls as he won the viewers choice Player of the Year award on the popular Monday night MTN Soccer Zone show. Obua defeated his closest rival by more than 30% gaining a huge 66% of all the votes cast. He picked up his second accolade of the season when the readers of a weekly soccer publication (Laduma) voted him as their favourite for the season. He also recently became the seventh Chiefs player in ten years to win the Kick Off readers Player of the Year award, now celebrating it’s tenth year of existence.

The evening was a truly memorable one for Obua who was nominated for six awards in all and was successful in carrying away four of them.

One would think that with all the attention David would be using his newfound celebrity status to his advantage, the lanky defender is far from that commenting after learning of his latest accolade. David said “ all of this is very humbling for me I never thought that I would have such admiration and adoration from the public it is all the kindness shown to me not just by Chiefs fans but by soccer lovers in general that makes been a footballer worthwhile”.

Of the fact that he could win a few more awards this season he says “the more awards I win, the more appreciated I feel if you are winning things than it shows that you are doing something correctly”. With the season coming to a close shortly David for now is only concentrating on winning one more award any other he says are a bonus when asked what award that is he says.

“We won the ABSA Cup all the players and deserved it because we played well through the tournament and it was be justice for us as every guy in this team has given his best all season long”.

On Tuesday night David is once again in the forefront for more honours as he has been nominated for two Premier Soccer League awards when the league's award ceremony takes place at the Coca Cola Dome, in Randburg this evening.
