Heading Chiefs to the top

At the end of Chiefs game against Celtic at the FNB Stadium on Saturday evening David Obua’s post match celebrations with his team mates was cut short as he was hauled off for a television interview - which was not surprising as the Ugandan international picked up another ‘man of the match’ accolade for his game winning display against Celtic.

After his duties with the press were over Obua took time out to share a few words with a number of supporters who had waited to cheer him off the field, such has been the Ugandan international contributions to the Amakhosi retaining their PSL title that he has now become a crowd favourite and a household name around the country.

Obua though is much more modest about his contributions to the success of the team, “our victory against Celtic has been a real team effort -had Rowen not made a wonderful save late in the first half we would have been in trouble. The thing is that we all play our part in ensuring that the final result is for the benefit of the team”.

After struggling to find the back of the net for much of the first half Obua headed Chiefs into the lead in just past the hour mark, which made him the clubs top scorer for the season which once again accepted with the humbleness of a true champion. Adding, “when Arthur sent in the cross I had to think quickly and I saw where the goalie was positioned so I decided to head the ball downwards and away from him which obviously worked”.

On the fact that he is currently the clubs leading scorer for the season having scored three goals in his last five games David commented “ I just feel great at being able to get into the right positions and score goals whether from free kicks or in regular play. I enjoy scoring and if I can score and create goals I don’t have a problem with that”.

Obua is not concerned by the fact that there is a weight of expectation on Chiefs to retain their PSL title saying “this pressure surrounding us at the moment is good because the only thing I can think of right now is how to retain the league championship, all of this is motivating me to perform at a higher level and get the team places”.

With six league games to the run in for the Championship for the Amakhosi - Obua is confident of a third title in the bag for Chiefs and is looking forward to perhaps adding another piece of silverware to the cabinet along with the league title, come the end of May, which he hopes will be in the form of the ABSA Cup. Chiefs begin their campaign for a first ever ABSA Cup under the new sponsors this Saturday when they take on defending champions SuperSport United in an afternoon kick off at the FNB Stadium which is at 15h10.
