Disarming Arrows a priority for Chiefs
Disarming Arrows a priority for Chiefs

After just a day in Johannesburg The Amakhosi were on their way back to Durban on Tuesday in preparation of the Wednesday afternoon meeting with Golden Arrows in Chatsworth.

Some twist of fate saw the Arrows' Chairperson, Mato Madlala, travel on the same plane from Johannesburg to Durban with Chiefs. The Amakhosi coach, Muhsin Ertugral, shared some warm words with the Arrows boss and he will be hoping that his team take a very different approach on Wednesday afternoon, as Chiefs face the stark reality and danger of not making it into the top eight for a second consecutive season.

That is something that Ertugral would, under his watch, very much like to avoid. Collecting three points off Arrows would go along way towards helping Ertugral ensure his team get that all-important top eight slot.

For Arrows the 2007 – 2008 season has been one that they have gotten a lot out of and a current fourth place standing is indicative of the way a young and very determined team have been playing, under the guise of Manqoba Mngithi.

Arrows were at one stage tipped to be outside contenders for the league but some indifferent form through March saw them lose ground in this regard, as they lost two and drew two matches. Arrows have made a better start to April - winning two of three matches, their most recent league engagement saw them drop points against relegation-threatened Jomo Cosmos on Sunday.

Arrows though do remain vulnerable at the back and have conceded 27 goals in 26 ABSA Premiership matches this season. They do have the enterprising Kagisho Dickgacoi to thank for ensuring that they have positive goal difference, while he has contributed with goals this season he has also ensured that his team have not been over run in midfield.

Earlier in the season

It was Chiefs who pretty much dominated proceedings when the teams clashed back in December in the first round league encounter. Chiefs opened the scoring through Siphiwe Tshabalala, who along with David Mathebula, ran Arrows ragged throughout the game.

Arrows found a first-half equalizer from Dickgacoi but a second half surge ended Arrows hopes of consecutive league victories over The Amakhosi.

David Obua began by blitzing home a free kick on the hour mark. Cyril Nzama headed Chiefs into a two-goal cushion, scoring a third ten minutes later. Dickgacoi scored a second in the eightieth minute to cut the arrears, but Gerald Sibeko turned up to drive home a late fourth goal to hand Chiefs a memorable win.

It also meant that of the last five league encounters between the teams, Chiefs have managed to win four of them.
