Clash of the form teams as Amakhosi host Students
Clash of the form teams as Amakhosi host Students

Posted in News on Aug 30, 2007.

Two teams at the top of their game meet each other on Friday evening at the Olimpia Park Stadium in Rustenburg. With neither team wanting to lose their 100% start to the new campaign, Friday’s game is sure to throw up an interesting match up between two sides showing some good early season form.

Chiefs and their visitors on Friday evening Wits have not had an easy opening two games as Wits opened up their campaign with a goalless draw on the opening day against Cosmos, and they followed that game up with a another energy sapping game a 1-0 victory at home to Orlando Pirates in their next game. The Amakhosi in the meantime are also unbeaten and began with and opening night win on the 15th August against Benoni Premier United, and then played an exciting and action filled 1-1 draw with Cosmos in their next game.

Chiefs preparations for the BidVest game have gone far smoother then things went last week as The Amakhosi readied themselves for the visit of Cosmos, Muhsin Ertugral would have been pleased to see Siphiwe Tshabalala moving easily around the training ground during the past couple of days. Added to the fact that he could have Tshabalala to bolster his midfielder the signs are looking ominous that Kaizer Motaung Junior could also play some part on Friday evening against a team where he spent many years in the junior ranks.

The Amakhosi coach Muhsin Ertugral and his counterpart at BidVest Wits Roger Da Sa know each other well enough to have a good idea of what tactics the other might implement, as they met each other in the Cape Town derby when Ertugral was at the helm of Ajax Cape Town and Da Sa was in charge of Santos. This will be a coaching dual that Ertugral will be hoping to emerge the victor and keep his team close to the top of the league standings.

The history

The Amakhosi and Wits have a long standing rivalry which goes back to the early 1980’s and spans the length of the past couple of decades, last season Chiefs lost to the Students in the first game but found revenge of some sort when they won the return league game at the Marks Park Stadium in Johannesburg back in February of this year. Wits have down the years proved to be a tricky opponent for The Amakhosi, with the 2000 – 2001 and 2004 – 2005 seasons have been the only seasons in the ten PSL campaigns that the clubs have met that Chiefs have been able to defeat Wits both home and away.

Back in the 2004 – 2005 season when Chiefs brought Wits to the very same venue the Olimpia Park Stadium in Rustenburg, it was a do or die clash for either side as a loss for Wits would have seen their relegation woes worsen while Chiefs were in need of the win to keep up the pressure on Orlando Pirates at the top of the log.

As the clock wound down Roger Da Sa who was in his first spell as Wits coach back then and was urging his team to be calm as a point would have helped their relelgation battle, with a rush of blood to his head the Wits goal keeper Wayne Roberts rugby tackled Collins Mbesuma to the ground and the referee pointed to the spot and warded Chiefs a penalty. The Zambian striker needed no second invitation and scored the goal that gave Chiefs three very crucial and perhaps championship clinching points.

In the past few season Kaizer Motaung Junior a one time pupil of the Wits academy system has scored two goals against the students, on the final day of the 2003 – 2004 season in his first start for Chiefs he scored his first official goal for The Amakhosi. Earlier this year when Chiefs and Wits squared off at the BidVest Stadium located on the Wits University campus in Johannesburg, Kaizer Junior grabbed the only goal of the game and silenced the very vociferous and Wits fans.

The most interesting fact about last seasons first meeting between the two teams at the FNB Stadium was that the Chiefs goalkeeper Rowen Fernandez became the first Kaizer Chiefs keeper in the history of the PSL to score a goal in an official league game, when he converted a 43rd minute penalty against his former club, Fernandez goal though was not enough to save Chiefs from going down 2-1.

Who to watch out for

Onismor Bhasera proved once again that he could be a star find for Chiefs as he put up a gutsy performance against Cosmos over the weekend, the Zimbabwean international was given a more attacking role by Muhsin Ertugral and he reveled in the fact that he was given the chance to play further forward. Also in the midfield and given his first start of the season was David Mathebula who was perhaps Chiefs king pin in the midfield and was the link man between the midfield and attack, it took some unorthodox tackling from Cosmos to stop him and he will be looked at to continue with where he left off from the Cosmos game.

On the Wits end of the park Roger Da Sa will be hoping that his team captain Moneeb Josephs can keep the Chiefs attack at bay like he did against Pirates, in truth Joseph went from the ridiculous as he almost gifted Pirates a goal when he tried to dribble Paulos Masehe but was dispossessed by the Pirates player. The Buccaneers squandered the opportunity and Joseph’s blushes were sparred, he went from almost gifting Pirates a goal to making a number of crucial and key stops later in the game. Josephs getting it wright or wrong on the day will play a big part in eventually deciding which way the three points go.
