As Patrick Mayo's shot, from distance in injury time at the end of the game, flew high and over ten rows back and with it one might think Chiefs' hope of retaining their PSL crown.
In what was billed as six pointer for the Amakhosi, Chiefs were unable to break a resilient Bush Bucks and take home with them three much-needed points. In the end The Amakhosi played a dull goalless draw with Imbabala, who themselves were looking for the points in order to avoid landing up in what will eventually be a fight for PSL survival.
Chiefs, like they have been in their last couple of games, were slow off the mark and waited nearly a quarter of an hour for their first real scoring chance. Gert Schalkwyk was sent in the clear by Louis Agyemang, but he was beaten to the ball by the Bucks goalie who reacted faster. A couple of minutes later Schalkwyk was in the thick of things as he met a Arthur Zwane cross from the right and he made Dikete back track and pull the ball off the line.
Ernst Middendorp rung the changes at half time and introduced David Mathebula and Serge Djiehoua, in order to breathe new life into an ailing Chiefs attack, the duo did help make an impact and created a host of goals scoring opportunities. The best chance of the game fell to Mathebula who picked up a loose ball after Djiehoua had slipped after being set up by Zwane.
Mathebula collected the ball and took a ferocious shot, which ricocheted off the cross bar, David Obua took a first time shot as the rebound fell to him, he too could not hit the target and shot agonisingly close. Schalkwyk had one more opportunity on 72 minutes as a defensive mix up by the Bucks defence allowed him in on goal. As he left the defence in his wake he rounded the keeper but saw his shot land up in the side netting.
With Chiefs closest rivals in the title race both winning on Saturday; the Amakhosi will be beginning to think that a third PSL title could become a reality not in 2005-2006 but in 2007-2008. Chiefs now turn their attention to Cup football and Black Leopards as they face Lidoda Duvha in a weeks time in an ABSA Cup ¼ Final clash, winning the ABSA seems more believable for Chiefs at this stage. It presents the Amakhosi with their best opportunity of taking home any silver ware this season.
