Kaizer Chiefs have accepted an invitation from Provincial Government in Polokwane to participate in the inaugural Peter Mokaba Cup to open the newly-built Peter Mokaba Stadium.

The tournament has been planned for Saturday, January 23, with current Absa Premiership champions, SuperSport United, Brondby If from Denmark and Bidvest Wits University joining Amakhosi to celebrate the grand opening of the Fifa 2010 World Cup Stadium.

The Amakhosi will lock horns with SuperSport United at noon with Bidvest Wits featuring with Brondby in the opener to start at 10am. The final will be played on the same date starting at 5pm.

Football Manager, Bobby Motaung, expressed his gratitude to the Provincial Government for inviting the Club to the tournament, “We are grateful and honoured for the opportunity to participate in a tournament to open the Peter Mokaba Stadium that is going to host four games in June. The tournament is an opportunity for the province to test its preparation ahead of the tournament.”

For us as the Club, it is an opportunity for the Technical Team to intensify their preparations for the upcoming month of February, when we will play the last six games in the Premiership and, of course, the two cup competitions starting in March,” he told kaizerchiefs.com on Friday afternoon.

Public relations manager, Thebe Mohatle, added that the tournament will give the Club an opportunity to celebrate their 40th anniversary with fans in the province, “This is our first game since we turned 40 on January 7. We are happy to come back to this province after such a long time. It is very important that we start the year with a bang and we do not have to remind SuperSport United that we have a score to settle with them. Most importantly though, I invite all Amakhosi supporters to come in numbers and support the initiative by the Provincial Government,” he added.

Ticket sales will open on Monday, January 18 and will selling for R35. The 45 000-seat stadium will only accommodate 30 000 fans for the tournament.
