Kaizer Chiefs know the strengths, weaknesses and the perils of playing against BIDVest Wits all too well, as The Amakhosi faced the Students as recently as Wednesday evening in an Absa Premiership match which ended 1-1.

In round two of the cross town rivalry The Amakhosi get a run out against Wits on Sunday afternoon at the BIDVest Stadium in Johannesburg in a Nedbank Cup round of 16 tie.

Chiefs have not passed through to the Quarter - Finals of this event since the 2005 – 2006 season when they won the competition and will be backing themselves to reach the last eight and will hope to eliminate the defending champions Wits in the process.

Recent History

Sundays clash will be the third clash between the sides this season after their two league clashes which ended in one win for Chiefs and a draw, the most clashes between the sides was during the 1997-1998 season when they met a total of five times. Chiefs have a good record against Wits in recent years at the BIDVest Stadium, having won on their last four visits to the Stadium, all of those games being league games.

Overall in all competition in six away games against Wits going back to the 2004 – 2005 season the Amakhosi are unbeaten against Wits, the last meeting in a Cup match between the teams was during last seasons MTN8 tournament which Chiefs won 3-1.

Another stat that Chiefs will be hoping repeats itself is the fact that on the last two occasions when they have faced the defending Nedbank Cup Champions in this competition they have emerged as the victors.

Those games were against SuperSport United in 2005 – 2006 and Ajax Cape Town in the 2007 – 2008 tournament who were the holders of the trophy at the time.

Cup Run

Chiefs gave up a two goal lead before defeating National First Division side Nathi Lions 3 – 2 in the previous round of the Nedbank Cup, veteran Chiefs midfielder Gerald Sibeko slotted home from the penalty spot to secure Chiefs passage to the last 16. Wits began the defense of their Nedbank Cup trophy by eliminating fellow PSL side Santos with a 1 – 0 win over the Capetonians in their round of 32 clash.

Missing out

Tinashe Nengomasha will play no part in the game on Sunday, the midfield general picked up a yellow card during the 1-1 draw on Wednesday evening between the sides clashed. He is now suspended for the game, also missing for the game is midfielder Mandla Masango who set up Chiefs equalizer against Wits. Masango is away with the South Africa u23 team in Mali where they will be facing Libya in an Olympic Qualifying game on Saturday.
