Kaizer Chiefs lost 1-0 against Ajax Cape Town in an ill-tempered encounter played in front of screaming 25 000 fans at Newlands Stadium on Saturday night.

Ajax Cape Town midfielder, Dipsey Selolwane scored the only goal of the match from a penalty spot in the 63rd minute giving his side an advantage ahead of the return fixture next Sunday.

The Serbian born mentor, Vladimir Vermezovic had made two changes to the side that drew with Ajax neighbours Santos at Orlando Stadium last weekend.

Kaizer Motaung Jr replaced Nkosinathi Nhleko who missed the game due to flu and Thabang Rooi was preferred ahead of Jeffrey Ntuka in the heart of the defence alongside no nonsense defender Thomas Sweswe.

The visitors had brighter start when Kaizer Motaung Jr was denied from close range by veteran goalkeeper, Hans Vonk. This was after Ajax defence failed to clear a cross from Tlou Molekwane on the right.

Itumeleng Khune was called to duty as action swing to both sides of the field; this was when young Thulani Serero maneuvered his way into the 18 area box forcing the Bafana Bafana no. 1 to pull a good save. Khune was at his best minutes later as he parried Franklin Cale’s dangerous free kick as Ajax searched for an opener.

Ajax who controlled the proceedings towards the end of the first half were again in the thick of things as Thulani Serero’s same time strike was saved by an alert Khune to keep the score goalless at half time.

Chiefs started the second half like a house on fire with Abia Nale mesmerising the hosts with his deft touches but it was Ajax who scored first from the spot.

Referee Peter Mabuza awarded Ajax Cape Town a bizarre a penalty after he alleged defender, Thabang Rooi to have brought down Thulani Serero inside the box. Dipsey Selolwane made no mistake from the spot.

The Glamour Boys were later denied what looked like two clear penalties when Nhlahla Shabalala appeared to have pushed Abia Nale inside the box. Secondly, Knowledge Musona was pushed inside the box to a surprise of Kaizer Chiefs bench and the fans, Peter Mabuza waved ‘play on’.

The referee had to stop the game as angry Kaizer Chiefs faithful threw missiles into the pitch a gesture that might backfire for the Club.

Knowledge Musona could came close grabbing an equaliser when his shot was brilliantly saved by Hans Vonk as the Glamour Boys searched for an elusive equaliser, 1-0 to Ajax at Newlands Stadium.

The two clubs will have to do it again at Orlando Stadium next Sunday, 23 August 2009 for the return leg.
