In October 2006 The Amakhosi along with the South African guide dogs association and the Gauteng Government embarked on the ‘shades for a day campaign’, a project aimed at promoting eye care to various schools around the province.

Along with a number of sun glasses manufacturers the club began visiting schools and spoke to kids at the schools about taking protective care of their eyes against the ultraviolet rays of the sun. Part of the programme saw Chiefs hold a competition earlier this year where two primary school learners from Gauteng could be the guest of Amakhosi midfielder David Obua and spend a day with him.

On Friday Tricia Harraway of Bryanston in Johannesburg and Siyabonga Goma of the Forest Town Primary School also in Johannesburg, who were the winners of the competition spent the day with the friendly and delightful Ugandan international.

Obua began the day by taking the kids with him to the Kaizer Chiefs Village in Naturena where they watched The Chiefs first team train on Friday morning, they were then treated by the Chiefs star and his team mate Kaizer Motaung Junior along with members of the Kaizer Chiefs Magazines and website to lunch at a nearby by restaurant.

Thereafter The Amakhosi players handed over a number of gifts to the youngsters before they made off for home late on Friday afternoon.

Tricia loving it

David Obua always a gentleman and a natural whenever The Amakhosi interact with younger fans made a huge impression on Harraway and Goma, as both kids enjoyed being around the tall midfielder.

Obua gave them a tour of the Kaizer Chiefs Village and introduced them to the rest of his team mates prior to training on Friday morning, and after what was an exciting and eventful day Tricia Harraway said to kaizerchiefs.com.

“I had a very nice time on Friday David and the team were very kind to myself and Siyabonga, I was worried as to how the players would act towards me. As soon as we came to the centre they greeted us and made us feel at home, meeting the Chiefs players is was an experience I will cherish for the rest of my life, and I can not wait to get back to school on Monday and tell my friends about my experience on Friday”.

Obua time out

David Obua seemed to enjoy being in the company of the two newest members of his fan club and had a glorious time with Tricia and Siyabonga, the 2005 – 2006 PSL Player of the year Nominee had the following to say once he had parted company with Harraway and Goma.

“Being with kids is always fun getting their views on issues and listening to their opinions is entertaining, I think that we could not have had to better winners as they were just wonderful to host.

In addition they seemed to know a lot about the team, its history and players, hopefully in future we can give more kids the opportunity to spend time with us and work as an inspiration to them to help full fill their dreams and ambitions”.
