Kaizer Chiefs beat Golden Arrows 2-0 in the Absa Premiership match played at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Reneilwe Letsholonyane headed Chiefs in front on 39 minutes, scoring his third goal of the season, and Kaizer Motaung Junior turned home a lay-up by Letsholonyane from close range three minutes before half time to hand Chiefs the points.

In the early stage Arrows did not look like a team who had contested a cup final a few days earlier, but midway through the first half they began to wane and Chiefs came inches away from taking the lead. Siphiwe Tshabalala picked up a deflected shot by Letsholonyane and from the left wing passed the ball to Motaung Jr, who hesitated slightly and before having a crack at goal. Thanduyise Khuboni was able to slide in and clear the ball off the Chiefs striker inside the Arrows six-yard box.

Motaung Jr more than made up for letting that opportunity slip by when on 39 minutes he sent a perfectly floated towards Letsholonyane, who rose to meet the ball and headed it away from Da Rocha and home to put the home team in front.

With half time approaching Arrows produced a moment of magic with quick, one-touch passing which almost came to pay dividends when Richard Henyekane back-heeled the ball into the path of Philani Shange, who forced Arthur Bartman to come up with a big save.

In the 42nd minute Letsholonyane and Motaung Jr swapped roles, as the former was able to collect a lob over the Arrows defence by Jimmy Tau and square the ball to the unmarked Motaung Jr who was able to gently knock the ball home to give Chiefs a 2-0 lead and also put his name into the history books as his goal was Chiefs 600th in the PSL.

Arrows’ best chance of the match came with 25 minutes remaining as Ntlantla Zothwane was able to react quickly to pick up a miss hit clearance by Chiefs keeper Bartman. Zothwane collected the ball and let fly at goal from 22 yards out; his sweetly hit shot went along the ground beat Bartman but could only hit the bottom of the right hand post.

It was not to be Arrows’ night as they could not repeat their cup final form. Perhaps the biggest highlight of the second half was the failure of a few floodlights which got the fans cheering – it was in the final minute of normal time and did not make much of a difference to the players and both teams continued on to complete the game.

With arch rivals Orlando Pirates visiting on Saturday, this win comes at a perfect time for Vladimir Vermezovic and his team.
