Kaizer Chiefs lost for the second time in nine days to arch-rivals Orlando Pirates when they were beaten in Telkom Charity Cup semifinal match on Saturday afternoon in front of a capacity crowd in Mmabatho.

The match headed for a penalty shoot-out after the match ended 1-1 after 90 minutes. Pirates took the lead through a Moketi Tsotetsi own goal in the 64th minute. Chiefs put themselves back in contention when they hit back a few minutes later as Tinashe Nengomasha struck the goal of the day to bring the teams back to a level pegging.

Chiefs though can count themselves unlucky not to have been able to have progressed into Saturday evening’s final, as they were the more creative team and for want of better finishing they could have extended their stay in Mmabatho. In the end an eleventh Telkom Charity Cup title was not to be and Chiefs will now shift their attention to the PSL season which kicks off on the 15th of this month.

Missed opportunities seal Chiefs fate

In truth the game need not have gone to a penalty shoot out as Chiefs had the opportunity to have won the game inside regulation, with a number of easy chances coming the way of The Amakhosi. As early as the 11th minute Nengomasha was stamping his authority on the game as he fought of the attention of Lucky Lekgwathi and stormed down the right. On the edge of the 18 yard area Nengomasha was able to play the ball back to Shaun Bartlett who sent in a well floated cross, which Francis Chansa pushed downwards to Thuso Phala. With the goal at his mercy, the Chiefs midfielder shot the ball over the post from just a few yards out.

With the game destined for a penalty shoot-out, Amakhosi substitute David Mathebula squandered a gift of a chance after he outthought the Pirates defense. As a long ball was sent towards Bartlett, the Chiefs striker climbed but could not reach the ball. Mathebula acted quickly latched onto the lose ball out sprinting Pirates defender Makita, with just the keeper to beat the number 24 shot the ball across the face of goal, he had the time to have picked his spot in the net.

Tinashe gets the nod

Nengomasha got the nod as the man of the match. The hard tackling midfielder was at the fore for Chiefs, helping out in both attack and defense. Pirates took the lead on 64 minutes when Lebogang Mokoena raced onto a through ball, as he entered the Chiefs danger area he played a ball across goal searching for Ralph Matema. Instead the ball ricocheted off Chiefs defender Moketi Tsotetsi and flew up and past Baron to hand Pirates the lead, somewhat against the run of play.

With Chiefs on the back foot, The Amakhosi began to press to some how find a way back into the game. They duly did four minutes after Pirates had initially taken the lead. From virtually out of nothing Nengomasha got Chiefs back into the game as he controlled a wayward looking ball and sublimely struck in on the half volley from some distance out. The ball turned through the air and deceived Francis Chansa as it swerved past him and evaded his out stretched finger tips to hit the back of the net. The Pirates goalie had no chance of stopping what was a perfectly struck ball.

Shoot out nightmare

In ten penalty shootouts in past Charity Cups, Chiefs had only evercome out the loser in two of those. So when the match went into the gamble that is penalty kicks, the good money would have been on Chiefs to come out trumps. Unfortunately it was not to be even though Onismor Bhasera did manage to score Chiefs first spot kick in the shoot- out. The three Chiefs players who followed him were unable to find away past Chansa. The Pirates goalkeeper was up to the challenge as he managed to guess correctly saving the penalty kicks of Bartlett, Nengomasha and Scara Ngobese, while Pirates had the luck of the shoot-out go their way as Sema, Makhanya and Leshabane all beat Baron to earn Pirates their fifth Telkom Charity Cup victory over Chiefs in eleven outings.
