On 16 October 2026, Kaizer Chiefs proudly celebrates the 82nd birthday of our beloved Executive Chairman, Dr Kaizer Motaung. Known affectionately as Chincha Guluva, Dr Motaung’s journey from the streets of Soweto to the most renowned international football arenas across the world is a story of vision, resilience, leadership, and pioneering spirit. His birthday is not only a personal milestone or a proud moment for the Motaung family, but also a moment for the Amakhosi family - players, legends, celebrities, and millions of young and old supporters to honour the man who built Kaizer Chiefs into Africa’s most iconic football club.
This year’s celebration carries a special resonance. The team is currently competing in the CAF Confederation Cup in Zambia, a country that holds deep significance in Dr Motaung’s story. It was here that Chincha Guluva showcased his talent before embarking on the life-changing move to the United States of America when he signed for Atlanta Chiefs in 1968.
His performances in South Africa as a teenager, followed by his stint in Zambia, were stepping stones on a path to achieving great acclaim in America’s professional leagues, and later laying the foundation for his eventual return home to establish Kaizer Chiefs in 1970.
The Chairman’s leadership has always been defined by courage and foresight. Forming a team known as Kaizer XI as a 24-year old - before founding Kaizer Chiefs a year later - was not merely about creating a football team; it was about building a community, a culture, and a brand that would, and did, resonate far beyond the pitch. His emphasis on professionalism, discipline, and flair transformed Amakhosi into a household name, inspiring generations of players and supporters alike.
Today, the Club stands tall as a symbol of excellence in African football, thanks to the values instilled by its Chairman and those he worked with throughout the years.
As part of the celebrations, scores of Club legends have shared heartfelt reflections on Dr Motaung’s mentorship and vision, recalling how he shaped their careers and lives. Celebrities and friends of the Club have also joined in, emphasising his influence beyond football - as a cultural icon, philanthropist, and father figure to the nation.
Supporters across South Africa and beyond are encouraged to join the celebration using the dedicated hashtag #KaizersBirthday, sharing their tributes and memories. The upcoming CAF Confederation Cup fixture on Saturday against Red Arrows in Zambia will be dedicated to Dr Motaung, symbolising the full-circle journey of his career. Players will wear warm-up tops emblazoned with “Happy Birthday Chairman”, while special tribute videos will be shared on our social media platforms throughout the day and the rest of the weekend.
At 82, Dr Kaizer Motaung remains the heartbeat of the Club. His inspirational story - from Phefeni in Soweto to America, from player to Chairman, is a reminder that dreams, when pursued with courage and vision, can transform not only individual lives but entire communities.
On this special day, we salute our Chairman, mentor, and father figure. Happy Birthday, “Boy-Boy”, “Lefty”, “Bra K”, “Chincha Guluva”. May your legacy continue to inspire many generations to come.
We love you, dear Chairman!
