Kaizer Chiefs' 2-1 victory over their city rivals BIDVest Wits in an Absa Premiership clash on Wednesday evening saw the club set a number of benchmarks, as they sent the statisticians rushing out to update their information.

Chiefs' win over Wits was their third straight derby win over a Johannesburg-based side this season, after earlier wins over Jomo Cosmos and Moroka Swallows. It is the first time since the foundation of the Premier Soccer League in 1996 that the Amakhosi have had to play three derby games in their opening three fixtures.

The goal scorers in the win over Wits also took on further significance as both Lehlohonolo Majoro and Josta Dlaldla have scored all of the Amakhosi’s six league goals this campaign, with each netting three goals.

It is also the first time that two players have scored in tandem in three consecutive matches for the Amakhosi in the PSL era. By winning their third straight game it is also the first time since the 2004/2005 campaign that Chiefs have started off the season with three wins in a row.

The game on Wednesday evening was Chiefs' eighth win in all competitions against Wits with Vladimir Vermezovic as their coach (five league, three Cup). It was their third win in league competition against them and their sixth overall.

With Vermezovic as their coach, Chiefs have now netted 16 goals in eight games against the Students at an average of two goals per game.

Most significantly the victory over Wits moved Chiefs to the top of the Absa Premiership table. It is a position that they are occupying for the first time since January 26, 2007, when a 1-0 win over Ajax Cape Town took them to the top of the table for a week.
