Amakhosi ready to beat Samba out of Brazilians

With Nations Cup being settled and Bafana Bafana’s antics which were cause for much consternation in the country being put on the back burner, attention turns to league football.

Most of the countries attention has turned to league football, what a way for the Amakhosi to resume the defence of their PSL crown than with a mouth watering match up against Mamelodi Sundowns the current league leaders.

In the last part of the 20th century Sundowns ruled the local soccer scene in terms of the PSL and regularly dominated matches against Chiefs. The new century has brought with it a different tune and it is Chiefs who have been singing sweetly as the dominant force over the team from the capital since the turn of the century.

Having won five out of the ten league games contested in this fierce Gauteng Derby and having lost just once to the Brazilians with four draws since the start of the new millennium, the Amakhosi will be confident of continuing their winning ways over Sundowns.

Last season Chiefs and Sundowns contested what could only described as the match of the decade, after ending honours equal in the first encounter at the FNB Stadium towards the end of 2004. The stage was set when the two teams met at Securicor Loftus for the second time in the 2004 – 2005 season, in the heat of Tshwane Sundowns took an early lead and made Chiefs sweat for the next thirty minutes. The game turned on it’s head when first David Radebe and than Collins Mbesuma struck to give Chiefs the lead with half time approaching, the Amakhosi were than dealt a blow when Scara Ngobese was sent off on the stroke of half time.

Sensing a way back into the game with Chiefs down to ten men the Brazilians went after that elusive equalizer, which they duly got thanks to Godfrey Sapula in the 58th minute. Their joy though was short lived as Collins Mbesuma had other ideas and restored Chiefs lead a minute later, four minutes after that Mbesuma completed his hat trick to restore Chiefs two-goal cushion.

With six minutes to go Mthombeni struck Sundowns third goal to ensure a photo finish to an exhilarating game which Chiefs held on to win playing for fourty five minutes and scoring two goals with ten men.

Chiefs will be hoping to reproduce the heroics of last season on Wednesday evening in what has been billed as a potential title deciding game.
