The 11th June 2009 marks 365 days to go before the kick off of the world biggest sporting event, FIFA World Cup in the African soil in 2010. The 19th edition of the World Cup will be played from 11 June-11 July next year.

The icon of South African football, Chairman and Managing Director of Kaizer Chiefs also member of the Local Organizing Committee, Kaizer Motaung took few minutes to speak to kaizerchiefs.com about the milestone and the upcoming Confederations Cup.

“One can feel the buzz around the country as the biggest sporting spectacle draws closer and closer,” he said.

“The country has come a long way since we were awarded the rights to organize this event, stadiums are nearing completion, the road networks are being completed, the hotels are getting ready and most importantly the community is being hyped up as the days draw closer.”

“Hosting the Confederations Cup will without a doubt measure our readiness ahead of the World Cup, this also worked well for Germany prior to 2006 World Cup. It is encouraging to hear that our people are going out to buy tickets to support this event.

According to reports, the games played in Cape Town (Iraq vs. Poland) and in cold rainy Pretoria (Italy vs. New Zealand) on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively saw our people coming in numbers to the stadium and this is a testimony of the passion South African have for the ‘beautiful game’. I have no doubt that the spirit will continue during the tournament and of course next year during the World Cup.”

Motaung also paid a glowing tribute to the President and government for the support they have given in ensuring that South Africa lives to the expectation of the world.

“It is gratifying to see our government not forgetting our brothers in Africa for the way they have supported our efforts as footballing community in fulfilling the promises we made to the world to organize the best world cup ever.”

“Captain Chincha” concluded by wishing the teams that are already in the country for the Confederations Cup a successful stay, “We are looking forward to see some of these countries coming back here for the World Cup.”

I am hoping that when they leave these shores they will leave the Confed Cup behind,” he added with a smile.
