After going on break due to midyear exams and school holidays, the Gauteng Development League (GDL) resumes for the Kaizer Chiefs Youth Development Academy teams. The U-13, U-15, U-17 and U-19 sides have returned to training and will face a tough opponent in their first match.
“This weekend’s match is against Mamelodi Sundowns in Pretoria,” confirms Head of Youth Development Sundra Govinder.
“This will be our first league match since the break which is against one of the top academy sides in South Africa. It is going to be a good test for our boys,” adds Govinder.
While the youth sides have been training for the past two weeks, they were given programmes to follow to keep fit during the holidays and Govinder is adamant the boys will continue where they left off.
All four sides in the Youth Development Academy currently occupy positions within the top three on their respective logs. The next few weeks provide an opportunity to cement and strengthen their positions as they face fellow title contenders.
The boys seem to have been motivated by two tough weekends of having to face Sundowns this coming weekend before hosting Orlando Pirates at Naturena Village the following weekend.
“That will conclude the first round of fixtures in this season’s GDL, after which we begin the second round of fixtures against Bidvest Wits,” concludes Govinder who appears extremely satisfied with his charges’ discipline and determination.
The Kaizer Chiefs youth sides visit Mamelodi Sundowns at Clapham for an all-round intriguing football affair. The U-13s kick off proceedings at 9:00 on Saturday, 13 July 2019.
