Kaizer Chiefs Reserves ended the 2018/19 Multichoice Diski Challenge in fifth position. They closed off the season with a 3-1 loss at the hands of champions, Bloemfontein Celtic Reserves.
Sizwe Twala scored Amakhosi’s solitary goal in the grand finale of MDC league fixtures played at Makhulong Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
“This match simply summed up a season of fluctuations,” reflected coach Arthur Zwane. “Check the final stats – we scored a lot of goals, but we also conceded very soft ones and, more so, lost matches that we weren’t supposed to lose. Overall, however, I’m happy with the way the guys are developing as players.”
The MDC season had 15 games. There were some highlights.
“We have done our best,” added the Chiefs Reserves coach. “Our report card has some positive points to be celebrated. Twala scored the most goals and, as a team, we also netted the most, topping the sides above us.
Chiefs finished on a goal difference of +21, the highest in the MDC this season.
Striker Twala became the MDC’s top goalscorer, finding the back of the net 12 times. His dozen goals contributed to Amakhosi scoring 41 goals in total, which topped the goal chart in the challenge.
“We met our objective to grow talent, which resulted, for example, in the promotion of Happy Mashiane to the first team. And there’s also our contribution to the national team – the Under-20s had two of our players in the squad that qualified for the 2019 World Cup.”
Njabulo Blom and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo scooped a bronze medal at the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations. The Under-20 World Cup will take place in Poland in May.
Chiefs Reserves are the reigning champions of the MultiChoice Diski Shield, which will soon start. Coach Zwane and his charges will be relishing the opportunity to try and win this cup competition again.
“We have a few weeks before the start of the Shield,” concluded Zwane, we will use the break to prepare and get ready to defend our trophy.”
