“So far so good,” assesses Head of the Kaizer Chiefs Youth Development Academy Sundra Govinder on the progress of the youth sides. Govinder had a lot of praise for the youth sides competing in the Gauteng Development League (GDL).
“We played against Tuks last week Wednesday and all four sides beat them. On Saturday, we played against Jomo Cosmos and again managed to win in all divisions, he says”
The four Kaizer Chiefs youth sides’ (U-13, U-15, U-17 & U-19) clean sweep of results in their fixtures against Jomo Cosmos on 4 May 2019 took place at our base in Naturena.
The Chiefs U-13 side thrashed Cosmos 4-1 to maintain their 100% win record after four matches played.
There was a tougher assignment for the U-15 side, but they managed to prevail with a 2-1 win over Cosmos to remain among the pacesetters in the league.
The U-17 side remain undefeated after a 1-0 win over Cosmos. Although they are yet to lose a match, they are behind the log leaders as they have two matches in hand still to play.
The U-19 team made light work of Cosmos by putting five past them in a 5-0 thrashing. The result means that the U-19s have moved to the top of the log.
“We’re very happy with the development of the players. The boys are showing up against different teams and against older players,” analyses Govinder.
Coach Ernst Middendorp spent some time at the Youth Development Academy this week and was visibly impressed with the development of the youngsters.
“You can see the maturity in the players and how they’ve grown from last year. It is evident that the coaches have been spending a lot of time with the young fellows. They’re not just focused on winning games but also properly developing the players,” concludes Govinder.
The level the youngsters are at now will be put to the test when they take on one of the tougher sides in the GDL this weekend.
A clean sweep of results will be the main objective when the Kaizer Chiefs youth sides take on Wits Juniors at Marks Park on Saturday 11 May. The matches start from 09:00.
