Kaizer Chiefs would like to wish their players and the entire South African National U-17 team who will be participating in the 2021 CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco the best of luck in the competition. Amajimbos will head out today for the north of the continent to take part in the competition which will be held from 13 - 31 March 2021.
Four Amakhosi youth development players have been selected by coach Vela Khumalo to be part of the his 21-man squad that will represent South Africa at the tournament. They are the midfield trio of Siphesihle Tati, Mduduzi Shabalala and Ntandoyenkosi Nkosi and centre forward Njabulo Hlongwane.
Shabalala scored in successive games in the 2020 Cosafa U-17 tournament, netting in a 2-2 draw against Malawi and a 2-1 win against Angola in the group stages, where Amajimbos eventually finished as runners-up to Zambia and qualified for the 2021 U-17 Cup of Nations.
The SA U-17s who are drawn in Group C will begin their campaign against Mali on Monday 15 March and will then face defending champions Cameroon on 18 March. Their first two games will take place at the Stade Pere Jego in Casablanca. They will then move to the City of Mohammedia to taken on Senegal in their final group encounter. This game will take place at the Stade El Bachir on 21 March.
This will be South African U-17s’ fourth participation in the tournament. They previously qualified in 2005 where they ended in fourth place. They also qualified in 2007 and most recently in 2015 where they had their best finish ending as runners-up after losing to Mali in the final. The teams usually ending in the top four places would have qualified for the 2021 FIFA U-17 World Cup, which was meant to have been hosted by Peru, but the tournament will not be played this year as a result of the Coronavirus Pandemic. The South American nation will host the 2023 event.
The last time a South African team took part in a junior AFCON hosted by Morocco was back in the U-20 AFCON in 1997, where Amajita ended as runners-up to the host nation.
