While the senior side made us proud by winning the big Soweto Derby against arch-rivals Orlando Pirates for the fifth time in a row in the DStv Premiership at FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon, Kaizer Chiefs’ junior teams also excelled in their respective competitions this past weekend to complete a victorious weekend for Amakhosi.
The under-13 and under-15 Development Academy teams were crowned champions in their respective Gauteng Development League (GDL) Top8 competitions, played at the Panorama Sports Grounds. The under-13s beat SuperSport United 5-3 on penalties after finishing the final match 0-0. They had beaten Sundowns 4-1 in the semi-finals on Saturday to reach the final.
The under-15s beat Rosina Sedibane 3-0 to be crowned GDL Top8 in their age-group on Sunday. The young Chiefs overcame the School of Excellence 9-8 on penalties, following a 3-3 draw in their semi-final on Saturday.
However, it wasn’t to be for the under-17s, who did well to reach the final by beating SuperSport 3-1 in the semis on Saturday, but lost it 4-1 on penalties to Mamelodi Sundowns after playing to a 2-2 draw in regulation time.
The tournament is a precursor to the start of the new season of the 2023 GDL competition which kicks off soon.
The Kaizer Chiefs Reserve side were also in action on Saturday morning in the DStv Diski Challenge at Isak Steyl Stadium in Vanderbijlpark, where Amakhosi picked up three points with a 1-0 victory over Sekhukhune United.
