Zwane relieved by the six-month suspension

Kaizer Chiefs star midfielder Arthur Zwane could be back in full action for his club in August 2004 when the new season kicks off.

This, after Zwane and his club officials Team Manager Bobby Motaung, Team Doctor, Phil Maepa, and Administration Manager, Abdulla Mayet, gave a sigh of big relief on Sunday afternoon, 14 March 2004 when the SAFA Appeals board granted him a far lesser six (6) months suspension, with the 2 years ban suspended and a R50 000 fine, half of which is payable within 30 days from today (Sunday) and the other half suspended for two years, an appeal viewed by many as a victory against the initial two year ban following a positive result of traces of methyl-testosterone, a banned substance, were discovered in his urine samples recently.

The SAFA Appeals board reviewed the sentence it gave Zwane and the new sentence is effective from 2 February 2004 and the ‘Amakhosi faithfuls’ could see ‘10111’ in action as early as the next Telkom Charity Cup or the new Castle Premiership season.

Speaking from the SAFA offices at the end of the case, Team Manager Bobby Motaung was all smiles when he said: ”Finally, we can all sleep peacefully knowing that sanity has prevailed with this case. This is surely good news for the club and the player who has always shown exceeding commitment and discipline. Now we can all rest assured that Arthur will soon be seen in action in his famous no 18 jersey when we launch our campaign for the coming season.”

“We have to support the anti –doping structures though, by making sure that a recurrence of this sort of thing is avoided, not only with Arthur but all our players through an effective education system with our players on all consumables that might implicate them in such a dangerous way. We are, indeed pleased with the new verdict,” added Motaung.

The outcome of this appeal case will motivate the Amakhosi camp further as they prepare for ‘war’ against fellow title chasers Ajax Cape Town at the Newlands stadium on Wednesday, 17 March 2004 at 7:30pm in a Castle Premiership clash that might see Amakhosi grip the lead on top of the table if Sundowns beat Santos on Sunday, though Zwane himself will not be making the squad.
