Kaizer Chiefs boosted their chances of qualifying for CAF competition next season with a comfortable 2-0 win over Magesi at the Moses Mabhida stadium in Durban on Saturday evening.

Goals in each half by Club academy graduates, Wandile Duba and Mfundo Vilakazi respectively, were just dues for a confidence building performance going into the FIFA international break.

The victory elevates Amakhosi into fourth place in the Betway Premiership standings, on 36 points from 20 matches. Crucially though, They lie only one point adrift of third place, with two games in hand.

Amakhosi had much the better of the opening exchanges and laid siege on the Magesi goal early on, with Mduduzi Shabalala, Glody Lilepo twice and Pule Mmodi all having shots blocked by desperate defending, while Lebohang Maboe had a shot saved by Elvis Chipezeze all within the first 15 minutes.

The visitors did pose some concern on the counter attack but not enough to cause any direct threat to Bruce Bvuma’s goal.

Chiefs continued to hunt the opening goal, with Lilepo in particular, seemingly intent on repeating his match-winning feats against Durban City with his shoot-on-sight approach. However, he was still to find the accuracy that would have given his efforts a better chance of reward than they retuned, as he turned and fired a left-foot shot inches wide on the half-hour mark.

The deadlock was broken in the blink of an eye in the 32nd minute when Lilepo found Duba on the run into the box. In a flash, the precocious young striker glided past John Mokone as if he wasn’t there before beating Chipezeze superbly from a tight angle at his near post with perfectly placed shot into the top corner to put Amakhosi 1-0 in front.

The goal appeared to jolt Magesi out of their defensive shell and they made a brave effort to take the game to the superior Chiefs outfit, now with the confidence of a lead, yet it took until the 43rd minute for them to come close, when Sifiso Luthuli headed just wide from a free kick into the danger zone and, shortly afterwards, Mcedi Vandala’s free kick flew narrowly wide of Bvuma’s upright.

As the damp conditions underfoot made slick passing more challenging, Amakhosi comfortably negotiated their way to half-time in a commanding position and a lead on the board.

Chiefs fairly coasted through the second half against a side whose dearth of genuine quality and cutting edge underscored their position at the bottom of the league table, and might have put the result to bed earlier had substitute Gaston Sirino been more clinical with his shot after being set up by a flowing move involving Dillon Solomons and another sub, Mfundo Vilakazi.

The prodigiously talented Vilakazi showed the veteran how it is done in the 84th minute when he sealed the three points with an thumping strike with his weaker right foot, after initially mis-hitting with his usually reliable left, turning in Thabiso Monyane’s cross from the right.

Chiefs return to league action on 6 April when they visit Orbit College and will be determined to continue their winning run all the way to the end of the season.
