Goalkeeper Mbongeni Mzimela, currently the goalkeeper of the Kaizer Chiefs u-19 team has been asked by coach Ernst Middendorp to train with the Amakhosi first team.

The young keeper, who impressed many with his outstanding displays at a youth tournament in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, with the Chiefs development programme earlier in the year, was surprised by being singled out for this opportunity to train with the first team.

“I did not expect to be training with the first team so soon, I will use this opportunity to learn and grow over the next few months,” said Mbongeni.

Coach Ernst Middendorp is convinced that along with former development goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, Mzimela will ensure that Chiefs will be strong in this department for a long time.

Middendorp said of Mzimela “the development games are over for this year and I thought it would be a good experience for him to work with the first team goalkeepers it can only help his game, and keep him active”.
