Warm up to the final
Warm up to the final

Posted in News on May 10, 2006.

Any talk of Chiefs taking their final league game of the season lightly by resting key players and for the Amakhosi to place more emphasis on next week’s ABSA Cup Final instead, has been shunned by Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp.

The Amakhosi headman has all week kept his players focused on SuperSport United and is once again adamant that the advancing Cup Final will not distract them from ending the season with three more points. Middendorp sees victory in the final game of the season as a good motivator going forward, as well as being within the coach’s plan to finish off the season in second place.

Down the years matches between Chiefs and SuperSport have always entertained crowds and thrown up some interesting match up’s. In recent times SuperSport were able to hold an Indian spell over Chiefs. Prior to last season’s penultimate game of the season which Chiefs won 1-0 a result that eventually helped Amakhosi win the league title. You will have to travel back to the 1998-1999 season to find a time when Chiefs defeated Matsantsantsa prior to last season - that season also proved to be the last time Chiefs beat SuperSport away from home.

While SuperSport held sway over the Amakhosi in both league and cup competitions, in recent times their spell has begun to wane as Chiefs have begun to take the upper hand over them. SuperSport are still smarting over the fact that it was Chiefs who knocked them off their ABSA Cup perch and who now stand on the verge of winning back their title of South Africa’s cup kings. SuperSport were the contenders to Chiefs throne as they made it to five Cup finals in the last two seasons.

With the prospect of still being able to overhaul Pirates into second place and have the psychological edge over their archrivals Chiefs will have done their cup prospects no harm with victory over SuperSport on Saturday. Chiefs will also be looking to take advantage over SuperSport’s recent poor run of form and bring down the curtain on the season in a winning way.
