Vladimir Vermezovic kept his calm on Saturday night following a crucial win against Free State Stars in their own backyard.

The Serbian was under fire from football pundits and fans following the 3 all-draw against Mpumalanga Black Aces last Wednesday.

“It is very important for me to stay calm and we cannot start thinking we are world beaters after winning just one game. It is very important that we remain focus and calm under pressure,” said VV as Vladimir is called in football circles.

“On Wednesday we rested most of the players like Yeye (Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Josta (Dladla) and others. I continue to believe in all my players. Chippa (Nhleko) came off the bench to hand us a winner against Free State Stars and this shows that everyone in the group is important,” he said.

“Going back to the Free State Stars game, I think we were a better team throughout especially in the second half where we put the ball down and started to play according to our strengths. I always tell my players to keep knocking the ball around even when we are under pressure… “Play your normal game”, I always tell them,” he pointed out.

“At times the guys want to hit route-one and this is not how we play and certainly not how I want the team to play. In matches we have won this season you will see that we have kept the ball very well. The guys are starting to understand this and it worked tonight. I also think our organisation at the back was superb.”

The game marked the end of the Absa Premiership first round and Chiefs will travel to Cape Town for their second round opener against unpredictable, Santos.

The two sides played to a draw at Orlando Stadium early August.
