Vodacom Challenge: Match 2

Kick Off: 20:15

Temperature: 11°c, Wind NE 4.0 km/h

0-5 min: The second game of the 2006 Vodacom Challenge kicks off in front of a healthy crowd at the Newlands rugby Stadium in Cape Town, it is the visitors who attack first as Ryan Giggs heads down the ball down to Rossi. The young striker is unable to connect with the ball and the chance is wasted as Chiefs clear their lines through captain Cyril Nzama, Ryan Giggs is once again involved in the opening exchanges. When he plays in a ball through to Solksjaer Chiefs goalkeeper Rowen Fernandez is out fast to save at the feet of the Norwegian.

5-10 min: It takes the Amakhosi some time to find their feet, but soon attack down the right after defender Jimmy Tau breaks up field. He plays a neat one two with Zwane on the right wing, after a couple of neat exchanges Zwane plays the ball out to Gert Schalkwyk who over hits his return pass and it goes out for a United goal kick.

10-15 min: Chiefs begin to look more comfortable in the game and are not over awed by their Premiership opponents and Arthur Zwane once again wreck havoc with the United defense as he sends in a cross which causes confusion in the United penalty area. Chiefs are unable to make the most of the ensuing chaos in the box as United keeper Ben Foster and defender Danny Simpson collide in the area. Simpson a few minutes later heads up the field and as he makes his way into the Chiefs penalty area, is well tackled by Patrick Mayo who comes off second best in the clash. As a result of the ensuing collision the Chiefs defender is taken off for treatment but soon returns to action.

15-20 min: Chiefs keep up their neat inter passing with a few more neat inter changers, the end product is not what Ernst Middendorp is looking for from his team. Shaun Bartlett is unfortunate not to get more out of a cross from the left which sees his header go across the face of goal instead of towards Foster the United goalie.

20-45 min: Man United than conjure up the best chance of the half as Patrice Evra sends in a pin point cross from the left but Rossi is unable to connect with the ball and instead the chance is wasted

The game continues to move from end to end as Ole Solksjaer is once more found in a good goal scoring situation, his striking boots are left in Durban as he shoots high and wide into the Cape night sky. As the half nears its end Shaun Bartlett is played into a good position, his shot on goal is a soft one and foster can easily collect the ball.

45-60 min: The second period begins at a faster pace than the first as United create the initial opening, Ryan Giggs cannot control his volley and shoots straight in the ground and the ball is easily collected by Fernandez. United take control of this period of the game as Paul Scholes shot from distance is deflected narrowly over Fernandez cross bar by Derrick Spencer, than second half substitute Fangzhou Dong tests Rowen Fernandez with a ferocious shot from inside the six yard box. The Chiefs net minder is up to the challenge and blocks the shot, to hand United a corner instead.

60-75 min: Once again United dominate in the chances created stakes as a Ryan Giggs cross from the right is collected by Rossi, whose shot brings out the best in Fernandez who acrobatically saves to keep the score sheet intact. Chiefs create possibly their best chance of the half as David Obua’s kung fu style shot beats Foster but finds Patrice Evra on the line who clears the ball and stops Chiefs from what would have been a certain goal.

75-85 min: After a short lull in play United come back into the game again, as Ryan Giggs once again plays the role of provider, Paul Scholes is unable to control his shot and knocks the ball wide of Fernandez with the goal literally at his mercy. United than break The Amakhosi resilience with a goal on 83 minutes, Darren Fletcher makes a run into the Chief penalty area and draws Fernandez out he than lays off a pass to Dong who at first hesitates to shoot. He makes no mistake on the second attempt as his shot flies past Fernandez and into the top of the Chiefs goal, a harsh goal for the Amakhosi defense which stood firm all night long.

85-90 min: The Amakhosi begin to throw every thing forward in the latter part of the game as a number of players have the opportunity to draw Chiefs level, first Gert Schalkwyk has a shot from distance stopped by Foster. Next Shaun Bartlett is thwarted as he too is unable to beat Foster from distance, as the clock winds down David Obua weaves his way into the United penalty area and is unfortunate to see his well taken shot hit the side netting.

In Conclusion: Chiefs give United a tougher in encounter than they had in their first Vodacom Challenge game, The Amakhosi are unfortunate not to have at least shared the spoils with United. In the end the experience of the Premiership outfit told as they managed to create the opportunity and get the goal they were looking for. Based on this performance Chiefs should be able to get the better of Pirates in their next encounter in the Vodacom Challenge on Thursday in Rustenburg, they will be confident of getting another go at United on Saturday in the Final of the Challenge.
