Two Chiefs for Bafana
Two Chiefs for Bafana

Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter named two Kaizer Chiefs players in his squad for the international friendly against Australia in Durban next Wednesday.

The Bafana coach made a compromise by selecting two (defenders Cyril Nzama and Sphiwe Mkhonza) and not three players from Kaizer Chiefs as initially reported.

Taking three or more players from Chiefs would have probably infuriated the defending league champions, as they leave for Mauritius next Tuesday, a day before the Aussie clash.

Baxter named only two keepers in the squad and SuperSport United’s Calvin Marlin, who has been in great form recently, will fight for the number one spot with his former Ajax Cape Town teammate Moeneeb Josephs.

Dynamos top striker Sandile Ndlovu was, as expected roped in along with Shaun Bartlett, Benni McCarthy, Tyren Arendse, Siyabonga Nomvete and Sibusiso Zuma.

The Squad:

Goalkeepers: Calvin Marlin (SuperSport United), Moeneeb Josephs (Ajax Cape Town).

Defenders: Bradley Carnell (Karlsruhe, Germany), Nasief Morris (Panathinaikos, Greece), Aaron Mokoena (Blackburn Rovers, England), Thabiso Ramille (Mamelodi Sundowns), Cyril Nzama and Siphiwe Mkhonza (both Kaizer Chiefs)

Midfielders: Steven Pienaar (Ajax Amsterdam, Holland), Quinton Fortune (Manchester United, England), Delron Buckley (Arminia Bielefeld, Germany, Jabu Pule (SV Mattersburg, Austria), Benedict Vilakazi and Gift Leremi (both Orlando Pirates)

Strikers: Shaun Bartlett (Charlton Athletic, England), Benni McCarthy (FC Porto, Portugal), Tyren Arendse (Pirates), Siyabonga Nomvete (Empoli, Italy), Sibusiso Zuma (FC Copenhagen, Denmark) and Sandile Ndlovu Dynamos)
