Gerald Sibeko has been with the Club almost a decade and was part of the team that won back-to-back league titles between 2003-2005. In the October edition of Amakhosi magazine “Tso” as Gerald is affectionately known spoke about his decade at Chiefs and his ambitions for the future.

Gerald, can you believe that you are now already into your tenth season as Chiefs player? How rapidly has the time flown by?

Time flies! I think that being so busy campaigning season after season I don’t even realize that it has been such a long time since I began my career as a professional. You must also take into account that since I was 14-years-old, my life has been all about football. It is not just the last ten seasons that are gone; it is 16 years that has passed by. There have been ups and downs in my career, but I have enjoyed every moment of it.

When you came to Chiefs’ senior team there were a group of players who came with you. Overtime some stayed at Chiefs and others left. Did you share a good bond with these guys?

There were number of us. We were part of pilot project between Chiefs and RAU University (known now as University of Johannesburg). Basically we lived together and spent lot of days in the classroom and the nights on the soccer field. We really enjoyed our camaraderie. We enjoyed playing together and getting professional contracts within a short space of time, which showed the quality of development at that time. Our coach was Farouk Khan and he needs to be credited with helping us to make easy transition from youth to professional football.

Were you said to see some of your youth teammates leave the Club?

Sure, especially because we were so close. Guys who were really close to me where Tshepo Mashishi and Nhlahla Khubeka, the latter stayed with me at the team for six seasons. We were together for a long time and we were close friends.
