The second edition of Carling Black Label Cup was launched on Monday, 14 May 2012 at Melrose Arch, Johannesburg and it promises to be an even bigger event than the inaugural event that took place last year.
The competition, which is the only one of its kind in world football, provides the fans of both Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates to pick players to start for their respective teams and are also allowed to make one substitution during the game.
The match, pitting the two Soweto giants of South African football against each other, is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 28 July 2012 at Soccer City Complex in Soweto.
“There is no way our fans are going to allow Orlando Pirates to win the cup for the second time in a row,” said the Kaizer Chiefs Chairman Kaizer Motaung jokingly, who was accompanied to the media launch by Marketing Director Jessica Motaung, Football Manager Bobby Motaung, Brand Manager Dara Carroll and assistant coach Doctor Khumalo.
“The partnership between the two teams and Carling Black Label is a befitting one and it comes a long way.
“One of the elements that attracted us as the Club in this competition was the Corporate Social Responsibility aspect. Part of the prize money last year was won by a supporter which went to a worthy cause in the community.
“This competition also allows the fans to pick the players to the starting line-up and make one substitution during the game. Coaches are also being developed around the country through this initiative.
We were pleased in the manner the fans embraced the concept when it was launched last season. I would like to urge them to continue with the support they have shown and make it even a bigger tournament this year.
Motaung did not mince his words about the desire of the Club to win the trophy this season after losing on penalties last time around, “It is more exciting that Orlando Pirates won the trophy in 2011. This season the fans are going to help us in making sure the trophy goes to the trophy cabinet in Naturena.
To pick the squad the users are required to buy a Black Label and follow the instructions using USSD on their phones to vote for the team members and position.
The Competition closes on 24 July 2012 at midnight.
