David Obua, Chiefs player of the season last term left his mark on the tournament which was held in Polokwane over the weekend when he found the back of the net with one of his signature free kicks.

The Amakhosi’s Ugandan playmaker scored with a ferocious long distance shot in Chiefs first game of the tournament, against Black Leopards on Saturday morning. Obua was played a short pass by Siyabonga Nkosi from some distance out of the Leopards 18 yard area and he struck the ball with venom, the shot flew over the Leopards wall and rattled the back of the net.

Obua himself was ecstatic with scoring Chiefs opening goal of their pre season campaign adding, “it really felt good to be able to come off a long break and score a goal like that. It has really boosted my confidence and I do feel that from here onwards my game will improve”.

Having played out of his socks in Chiefs victories over the weekend one would think that David Obua would be content with his performances as he says a lot more work needs to be done.

“This past weekend’s games was the start for us and personally I do feel that there is a massive amount of work for me to still do, before the season starts. I am not at my best yet”.

Coming off a season which was full of personal triumph for him as he won the hearts of the Amakhosi faithful with his ability to step up to the big occasion, as helped Chiefs score memorable victories over fellow title contender Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.

Obua is aware of the expectations of the supporters and he is aware of the fact that he needs to take his game higher than he did last season “if I played in the stars last season, I need to take my game to the stratosphere this time around.

There is no point in going backwards I need to go forward and in so doing hopefully we as a team will all rise up together and get back our title”.

The twenty one year old utility man is looking forward to Chiefs next pre-season encounter, which will be against English Premier League Giants Manchester United, in just over a week’s time in Cape Town.

Obua continues “for us to get better we need to train hard and play a series of matches before the season kicks off against tough opposition, Man U will definitely push us. These are the kind of games we need to improve our game”.

Chiefs pre season campaign will move into full throttle in the coming week with Amakhosi training twice a day.

They will leave Johannesburg on Thursday for Cape Town. As they await the arrival of their English visitors whose first assignment will be against Orlando Pirates in Durban on Saturday and then three days later, Amakhosi will be reacquainted with the red devils who they last met thirteen years ago back in 1993 when the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
