The Amakhosi bid farewell to the FNB Stadium in true derby style

Posted in News on Dec 07, 2006.

This year’s Soweto Derby is set to take place at the FNB Stadium on Saturday 9th December 2006 for the very last time before the stadium closes for renovations for the 2010 World Cup.

This is the last time that the two largest Soccer giants will meet at the only stadium designated to hold a fan base of over 80000 supporters. This is the match known to put the entire country at a stand still, as it boasts the most attendance at any football game in the history of South African football.

Kaizer Chiefs Chairman , Kaizer Motaung was instrumental in the formation and construction of this stadium and so this marks an important date in this Football Legend’s calendar.

The giants will clash after a curtain raiser to be played by the Legendary soccer stars of yester year. The likes of Lucas Radebe, Joey Mabena, Fani Madida, Ntsie Maphike, Lucky Staliyanou and Marks Maponyane will take to the field against the South African Airways Managers before the main game.

Prizes for this game are courtesy of SAA. There are 4 vouchers to be won by the Most Entertaining Player and Man of the Match. Commentary will be done by the energetic Owen Ndlovu from SABC 1’s Soccer Zone.

Entertainment for the day includes local Maskandi Superstars Shwi Nomtekhala, Metro award winning Hip Hop group Tear Gas will also take to the field while Mgarimbe will communicate the day’s theme “FAREWELL FNB STADIUM” to the Amakhosi faithful.

The supporters will be treated to some eye candy as the Amakhosi Shakers vow to wow the crowd once more. The day is set to be a spectacular one as there will be airplane acrobatics and competitions from Vodacom and PEP where supporters are set to win cash prizes of up to R20000. It pays to be an Amakhosi supporter!

Supporters are urged to come early as the match will sell out based on historical statistics. History tells us that supporters camp out at the stadium as early as the night before where a ticket to the game can be likened to the Golden ticket to the sweet factory.

Come and enjoy the ‘family day’ with the largest sports brand in South Africa, bring all your loved ones and come in your authentic Kaizer Chiefs gear as we celebrate this one for the last time! The gates open as early 09h00.

Welcome to the Family, Love and Peace!
