Stiga in Bafana squad for Cape Verde

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Stanton Fredericks is the only player from Kaizer Chiefs selected to the national team for the World Cup qualifier against Cape Verde on June 5 at Vodacom Park in Bloemfontein.

Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter has also recalled striker Shaun Bartlett and defender Mark Fish, both of English Premiership club Charlton Athletic. The duo had previously retired from international football due to frustration with the national team administrators.

It appears to be a strong squad but also an ultra defensive one. Tottenham Hotspur star Mbulelo Mabizela has been listed a midfielder and will probably be used as a destroyer just in front of the back four.

The striking department looks thin with only three strikers - George Koumantarakis, Shaun Bartlett and Siyabonga Nomvete. But in the event of emergency, the coach can look to Orlando Pirates midfielder Benedict Vilakazi for goals.

p>FC Porto striker Benni McCarthy, another of those who had retired prematurely from international football, could have been in the squad had it not been for marriage commitment. McCarthy is getting married on the same day of the match.

The goalkeeping department will be manned by Emille Baron and Hans Vonk, who has in the past been linked to a move to champions elect Kaizer Chiefs.

Full squad:

Goalkeepers: Hans Vonk, Emile Baron.

Defenders: Thabang Molefe, Bradley Carnell, Nasief Morris, Aaron Mokoena, Mark Fish.

Midfielders: Mbulelo Mabizela, Elrio van Heerden, Benson Mhlongo, Japhet Zwane, Stanton Fredericks, Delron Buckley, Benedict Vilakazi, Lance Davids.

Strikers: George Koumantarakis, Shaun Bartlett, Siyabonga Nomvete.
