Amakhosi goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune made the most of a rare rest day on Monday to visit his friends and family in his hometown of Ventersdorp in the North West Province, and after his match winning heroics against SuperSport United in league action on Sunday it was a well deserved day off.

The Amakhosi shot stopper who suffered from cramps during the latter stages of Chiefs win over SuperSport is now focused on this coming weekend’s Telkom Knockout Cup Last eight clash against Free State Stars.

“I was in some pain after Sunday’s game my calf muscles were sore, I feel much better now and I am excited and looking very much forward to playing against Free State Stars on Saturday afternoon,” added Khune, who further explained that he has extra incentive to do well in the game against Stars.

“Stars coach Steve Komphela was one of the guys who called me up a few years ago to the national Under-23 team when he was the coach.

He gave me a platform to show my skills and I respect him and would like to well against his team.”

Khune also reflected back to Sunday’s outing against SuperSport and the man of the match accolade he picked up as a result of a number of crucial saves he made during the game.

As he explained “it was a difficult game we had to be very alert as it started out in hot conditions and finished off in wet and rainy conditions.

In the first half we struggled because we were playing against the wind, the team did tremendously well to get the result that we did facing varying climatic changes and a very tough opponent.”

The Chiefs goalkeeper does not want to take the credit himself for the win against SuperSport and insists that it was a professional team performance that saw Chiefs overcome the defending league champions.

“There is no question that we put in a lot of work in the build up to the SuperSport game and we will carry on in the same way for the next match, credit must go to our goalkeeper coach Rainer Dinkelacker and my defenders for their efforts in the build up to the game and during the match.”

Khune who has played in every game for Chiefs this season believes there was another reason behind Chiefs triumph on Sunday.

“Our fans were amazing during the game against SuperSport, to sit through the sun shine and the rain was motivation for us.

We need them to come out in large numbers again on Saturday when we face Stars, it’s going to be a difficult game but with voices in the stands we should pull through.”
