In a match dubbed as the real final The Amakhosi will be up against their old foes and long time PSL rivals Mamelodi Sundowns in a Nedbank Cup last sixteen match in Durban late on Sunday afternoon. It will make an interesting match as the two PSL giants have in recent times begun to wake up from their slumber.

After having gone through a lean patch midway through the season both Chiefs and the defending PSL champions Sundowns, have been able to pick themselves up and have got themselves back to winning ways in the league. Chiefs have won consecutive league games and Sundowns travel to Durban on the back of a 3-0 hammering of Black Leopards, the resurgence and finding of form of both teams will make Sunday’s game an open and exciting encounter.

Chiefs and Sundowns have already contested one cup final this season which Chiefs won on a penalty shootout namely, the Telkom Knockout Cup. And with them not able to hold on to their PSL crown Sundowns only hope of taking home any silverware will need them to win the Nedbank Cup, which will mean that The Amakhosi will have to up their game and be wary of a Sundowns team who will be looking to avenge that defeat. Whoever wins this game will depend on how the teams start the match.

Muhsin Ertugral will no doubt be looking for his team to come out guns blazing just as they did in the previous round of the Cup against Ajax Cape Town. The Chiefs coach though will be calling on his team to turn home their early chances in order to avoid having to go behind at any stage, or have the game go to extra time or the dreaded penalty shoot out.

In the past

Cup games between Chiefs and Sundowns have always been epic counters that have seen both teams in the past fight till the last; it began the first time the teams met in Cup Competition upon the formation of the PSL in 1996 – 1997.

Their first meeting was in the 1997 – 1998 Rothmans Cup Final Chiefs look headed for victory until Raphael Chukwu scored a late goal to cancel out Thabang Lebese’s earlier goal for Chiefs. The match headed to a replay and in the replay with Chiefs leading 1-0 Chukwu again found a late equalizer but The Amakhosi prevailed winning the shoot out, during Muhsin Ertugral’s first tenure as Chiefs coach in the 1999 – 2000 season he faced Sundowns in the BOB Save Super Bowl Final (previous name of Nedbank Cup). Chiefs won thanks to a Siyabonga Nomvete penalty, over the twelve years that the teams have met in Cup matches Sundowns have won just one of ten meetings between the teams. That was in the semi finals of the 2000 – 2001 BOB Save Super Bowl, in total half of these games have gone to penalty shootouts all of which have been won by The Amakhosi.
